Is heavy fast breathing normal?

Although it is not a all the time thing, most of the time when Frank lays on the floor, his breathing is really fast and heavy. He has done this for awhile now. Is this normal breathing for a boxer?

I guess it all depends on the dog. some boxers do alot of panting. has it been hot where you live? maybe humid. how old is Frank?

When it gets hot/humid, I noticed my Blizzy would breath hard and fast..

Echo and Carson got a dose of the New England hot and humid a few days ago and the hard fast breathing started..once the fan was on "turbo" speed and aimed right at them..they went back to a regular breathing pattern. They would start again if they positioned themselves so that the fan wasn't right on them.

I'd think if it was hot where you are, it wouldn't be uncommon for a dog to breath hard/fast in the heat. Were your others doing it also?

I've been wondering the same thing. My boy, Rufus is a big guy (3 yrs...90 pounds) and he's a very fast breather...even when resting...and even when it's cool or in the A/C.

My vet keeps telling me he's okay and not to worry about it, but I'm so paranoid since his sister, Ripley, passed away from a collapsed lung. Our new pup, Grady, seems to have a more normal breathing pattern.

Would love to hear the advice on this!

Remember, dogs can't sweat, so they regulate their heat by panting. Whether from exercise or high temps, if they are getting hot, they'll pant themselves cooler

It can also be a sign of anxiety, but if the dog is otherwise happy and going about his business, he's probably just warm. When it's warm out they may alternate between panting and regular breathing just to keep their temps down, even though the room temp hasn't changed, and they haven't gotten up and done anything. Panting can be hard work, so they pace themselves.

It is hot outside here, however, he does seem to do the panting even when inside with the A/C on. It could be that he is still warm and is cooling down I guess. He seems completely healthy, and doesn't seem to be in any distress...it just distresses ME a little to see him breath so fast!

This may sound really goofy, but does he lay on carpet or tile flooring? If it is carpet, he just may be hot... if he specifically searches out a spot on the tile floor, he is definitely hot.

You have to remember too, that their normal body temp is about 101.0, where ours is 98.6, so even if WE are comfortable, they may still be warm.

It's been between 90 and 100 for about 3 weeks here now and bimmer does the same thing when he comes in from outside. Heavy breathing, breathing fast and laying on the tile. Its normal

our boy has done this since we had him the vet told us that he could have laser surgery on his nasal passage to correct it so he may have a nasal problem....
