It's been a rough couple of days for Horatio and I. I was wondering if any of you have gone through similar problems with your boxers.
The last two days~
Thursday morning, Horatio was his normal playful self (he is a 5 month old fawn boy). He ate breakfast, we went on a walk, etc, etc. Then I left him home alone while I went to work. Our normal everyday routine (he stays in his crate).
Thursday Evening my husband came home from work and took Horatio for a walk since it was a beautiful day out. He text me saying that he thought Horatio was a little tired (didn't really want to walk, and he's been going on long walks since he was 9 weeks and loves them). Two hours later I returned home from work and by this time Horatio was extremely fatigued, didn't want to move and wouldn't eat or drink.
By midnight it had gotten progressively worse. He was very warm to the touch, and extremely fatigued to the point where he wouldn't move. We had been on the phone all night with the emergency animal hospital, who said to continue watching him overnight and bring him in first thing in the morning. We stayed up with him all night feeding him ice cubes (one of his favorite treats) to keep fluids in him. It got so bad that he would slump over (appeared to loose consciousness) from exhaustion when he tried to move.
Friday morning we rushed Horatio to the vet, where we found out his temperature was 105, and that his white blood cell count was extremely high. They hooked him up to fluid IVs, gave him antibiotics, and kept him overnight to get his temp down. Come to find out he has an intestinal infection.
This afternoon (sat) we got to bring him home. He is very tired, but being his normal self again and we are so thankful. The vet has him on antibiotics for the next week and hes scheduled for a follow-up next Sat. Fingers crossed he'll be fine!
Has anyone else gone through anything similar? It was very scary and I have no idea what he could have gotten into or if this could be something hereditary as he's only 5 months old.
