It's been a rough couple of days for Horatio and I. I was wondering if any of you have gone through similar problems with your boxers.
The last two days~

Thursday morning, Horatio was his normal playful self (he is a 5 month old fawn boy). He ate breakfast, we went on a walk, etc, etc. Then I left him home alone while I went to work. Our normal everyday routine (he stays in his crate).

Thursday Evening my husband came home from work and took Horatio for a walk since it was a beautiful day out. He text me saying that he thought Horatio was a little tired (didn't really want to walk, and he's been going on long walks since he was 9 weeks and loves them). Two hours later I returned home from work and by this time Horatio was extremely fatigued, didn't want to move and wouldn't eat or drink.

By midnight it had gotten progressively worse. He was very warm to the touch, and extremely fatigued to the point where he wouldn't move. We had been on the phone all night with the emergency animal hospital, who said to continue watching him overnight and bring him in first thing in the morning. We stayed up with him all night feeding him ice cubes (one of his favorite treats) to keep fluids in him. It got so bad that he would slump over (appeared to loose consciousness) from exhaustion when he tried to move.

Friday morning we rushed Horatio to the vet, where we found out his temperature was 105, and that his white blood cell count was extremely high. They hooked him up to fluid IVs, gave him antibiotics, and kept him overnight to get his temp down. Come to find out he has an intestinal infection.

This afternoon (sat) we got to bring him home. He is very tired, but being his normal self again and we are so thankful. The vet has him on antibiotics for the next week and hes scheduled for a follow-up next Sat. Fingers crossed he'll be fine!

Has anyone else gone through anything similar? It was very scary and I have no idea what he could have gotten into or if this could be something hereditary as he's only 5 months old.

Did your vet specify what kind of infection? Did they test for Parvo? My first boxer had coccidia and parvo and had similar symptoms. Keep a close eye on him and as long as he is improving things should be good, but if they aren't getting better or if they get worse take your pup back to vet. Did they give you any special food? If not feed him some boiled chicken and rice so it doesn't strain his little digestive system. I know you are worried, but try to relax. He is on antibiotics so things should be getting better. Sending lots of healthy ((vibes)) to Horatio!

They are still reviewing his blood work and stools. What came back so far is that his white blood cells were through the roof. Also his temp was at an extreme high at 105 (normals like 101.5 I think). I'm still trying to grasp and better understand everything as its been like a whirlwind. He got so sick in a matter of hours.

The one thing I'm regretting for doing is pet-sitting my friends chihuahua and cat last week, as I have a strong gut feeling that is where he got the virus to cause the infection. (No more pet-sitting in the future). Vet also said he could have also picked something up from the street as we live in downtown Boston.

As for now he is on Baytril to stop the infection and Diawin to help clean out his intestines and help with his diarrhea. They didn't give me any special food. I have gradually been feeding him his Wellness puppy food in much smaller meals then he's used to, to try and avoid overloading his small tummy (as he hasn't had any real food in over 24hrs). Good news is that he's eating everything and drinking lots of water. He has been home for nine hours and I think he has slept for 8 of them. He's much better and happy to be home, but still exhausted.

Poor baby, what a scare, he is eating and drinking so that's a good sign, sending lot's of healing vibes to your little fur baby.

Get well soon Horatio!! :)
