Interested in second boxer.....

I currently own a boxer. She is a female from the Ewo bloodline. She is not a show dog, but a great pet. My wife and I live in a house that has a nice backyard. Our current female is a fixed female brindle who is 3 years old. She has great temperment!! She is very friendly and goes to doggie daycare. I am thinking about getting a second boxer as a buddy to Kasie. I have a good breeder in Pennsylvania that has a litter with a nice flashy female fawn. Its mine if I am interested! Do you think Kasie would like to have a buddy (are 2 boxers better then 1?)? Also, with boxers is it much more stress or work owning 2 dogs then it is owning one dog. I have never owned 2 dogs at the same time. My wife and I are great boxer lovers!!! And Kasie is our baby!!! What should I do?????

I think that dogs are pack animals and I do think having two is great!

I would suggest getting a male instead of a second female, though (just my opinion). Male/female combinations are often preferable. There have been some recent discussions about this on BoxerWorld - you should be able to find them if you dig around a little.

Owning 2 females...

I have asked about the female/female combination to numerous breeders and the mostly tell me that based on how Kasie is (the fact the she is fixed, she is not aggressive..but at the same time will defend herself if needed...and she has been interacting with various dogs her whole life) she should not be a problem. If I get a second dog I will get her fixed too. I know its not a guarantee that their will not be a problem, but the likelyhood is small. I really do not like a male dog because of what goes on between his legs.....I love to rub the belly and dont want to worry about hitting anything!!

Is owning 2 dogs at the same time much more difficult then owning one? We are very clean and neat people and currently our house is well kept....which I want it to remain that way.

Go for it!!! I have 2 females 1 male and a very feisty cat. All different breeds and they get along great. 2 Boxers are better than one. They will keep each other occupied and boxers love to have another dog to cuddle and play with. Your eldest will probably start teaching your newest all kinds of good (& bad) stuff. It sounds like your sweetie will be just fine with a new sister.:D


PS.. I am a complete neat FREAK and I have no problems with the dogs and cat. I did buy a steam cleaner, though. 5th best investment I ever made!

Of course 2 are fun but, then there are 2 to walk, 2 to feed, 2 to take to the vet and so on. If your prepared for that then I'd say go for it.

Spaying won't actually make much of a difference if an aggression problem develops between the two. I once fostered a female Boxer and she got into a fight with my female Boxer, both of whom are very nice dogs. I had blood spattered on my walls far and wide. Nobody thinks their bitch will fight with another bitch, but I get calls all the time from people who don't undertand why their two little buttercups are at each other's throats. I mean, it can happen. It's something to be aware of.

With all due respect, I have to be honest and say this is a little silly, in my opinion. I have a male dog and it's just not a big deal. Many times, males are actually more laid back and cuddly.

Well from my experience with my two I say that two is MUCH better than one!! I cannot imagine just having one anymore. I have 2 females and have never had a problem with them. Bailey was a rescue that we soon realized had issues with other dogs (mostly male). When we decided to get another boxer it was obvious that we would need to get a female. From day one Bailey has always been "motherly" to Jasmine and we have never had one fight. Maybe that is luck? I say to go for another one. Maybe bring Kasie to the breeders and see how she reacts to a puppy? We were a little worried about Bailey and how she would react since she is older (7) and with an energetic puppy running around her it worried us. Like I said before she took a very caring and nuturing role on when we brought Jasmine home. I think having one is no worse than having two when it comes to being clean. If one is dirty that usually means the other one is also. Remember it is double the vet bills, double the food costs, etc. That took a little getting used to. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

Replies.....

I want to thank everyone so far who has sent replies! I take this decision very serious and never owning 2 dogs worries me! I do not want to jeopardize the happiness that Kasie has and I do not want to make the puppy unhappy. My wife and I can provide a good home and we are very affectionate to Kasie (just like we would be with a second boxer).

Another question, would it be rude to ask the breeder if after a few weeks (may2 or 3) Kasie (or the puppy) does not seem to like this relationship would he take the puppy back (hopefully, with a refund). I want to do what is best for both boxers....I do not want to take away the opportunity for either to have a happy lifestyle.

I'm sure Kasie would love the puppy and adjust... just as you would have to. You don't know how things will be when they are older...you just deal with it as it comes. I'm sure with proper training and care they would be just fine.
