I have a new boxer boy named "chuy". We want him to be an indoor/outdoor dog, and to go outside on command. How do we accomplish this, without confusing the dog?

when we first got him he would stay outside by the back door, even when the door was open he wouldn't come in(at the breeder's house the parents were mainly outside dogs), he was about 7 weeks old. at about 9 weeks we started letting him come in the house, but he still went out on his own, not sure if it was right. (we should've rewarded him for that). and now he is 12 weeks, he does go outside under command on occasion. he will sit by the door when it is open, at which point we reward him....but other times he just doesn't wanna hear us tell him to go out. and if he is outside he will rush in as soon as the door is opened. I can sense he knows the command, just doesn't always obey it.

Is there a good method to teach him to follow in/out?

my friend had a boxer who did this, so i'm assuming it can be taught.

Boxers are not outside dogs. They need their people! And your little one is just a BABY, definitely should not be outside unless with you! Potty training a puppy is a LONG process and won't be done until they are about 6 months old. I'm sure if you do a search on potty training you will find lots of good ideas that will help you make life with your little one a lot easier. Read the puppy forum and the sticky on top, too. Lots of good advice.

I second that. Boxers are NOT outside dogs, especially a baby puppy like that. They're also brachycephalic, a flat-faced breed which means they cannot regulate their own body temp sufficiently during extreme temps. You being in AZ should defintely not let him outside during those wonderful summer months you have. Boxers are also very curious by nature and will find something to entertain them. I would hate to hear that yours decided to tangle with a rattlesnake or a scorpion - those are everywhere in your neck of the woods. Boxers are also not an independant breed - some dogs long to be outside, patrolling the grounds, but a boxer is happiest when they are with their people and do not do well when left alone. Please re-think this and make him an indoor dog.

Like others have said he wants to be with you :) He too little to be left to his own devices. When he's older you could try a doggie door but I always would worry about what they might get into if no one is watching...

I wanted to get a doggie door, but if I'm not watching Chyna while she's out, she'll dig under the fence to the neighbors.

Dogs tend to do dog like things when not watched. Who knew? =P

Completely Boxer Crazy
My dog will be a year old next week. He is absolute "inside dog". Since I have him, I have never showered alone again! He sits with me, follows me everywhere in the house. If I cannot supervise him he is sleeping in the crate. He is the most happy if he can be with me or his dad, even when we don't touch him or play with him. He is just happy being next to us.
If you want to be successful in training your puppy use treat to train him. Boxers love to please so it is not very hard to train him to do what you want but you need patience and consistence.
Good luck
