I just want everyone to know how wonderful I think you all are :) Your kind words have helped so much. Even though Im still extremely sad, I dont feel so alone. I know one day it will all get better. But I know I'll ALWAYS miss Mr.Head (Harley) and he'll ALWAYS be my #1 buddy. I actually got by today w/out crying until this evening.......that's a huge feat for me. So I guess it's gotten a tiny bit easier. I sound like a child when I pout "I want him back" or "Why did he have to go"...........but those are things I keep wondering. Thank you so much for helping me through this horrible time in my life.

Jen,

You loved Harley very much and he knew it. He died gently at home in his favorite place. It was his choice to spare you because he was so strong and he loved you. I know he came and kissed you that soft boxer kiss before he left on his journey to the Bridge. He was happy to do it his way....be happy for him. He's having fun with my Capone right now waiting to see you again. Godspeed Harley.

I picked up Harley's ashes at the Vet today. Just when I thought I was starting to do pretty good.........today was definitely a blow. I cried 1/2 the day. It's like, he's home now, but he's not. I had a constant lump in my throat all day long. I miss him so incredibly much!!!!! :(

I'm so sorry for your loss. Tears are streaming down my face as I read this thread. I know you think you can't bear it, but it WILL get easier with time. Harley sounds like such a special dog, I'm sure he wouldn't want you to feel guilty or unhappy. But it really is hard those first few days. Just know that others are with you during this hard time.

This is the time of evening when I seem to miss my guy the most. It was the time we spent together, playing or just hanging out one on one........w/out his 2.5yr old human brother bothering him (I dont think he ever really "bothered" Harley......I think Harley loved it). Anyway, in the spirit of trying to remember all the good times/things........I'd like to write a couple things that come to mind that make me smile when I think of Harley. These are things I'll never forget.

*His smell. When he was all curled up and warm.....he smelled like fritos cornchips. Funny, I know. But my friends would call him the Cornchip dog.
* He would sit up on our couch, w/ his "robust" chest sticking out, and he'd be 1/2 asleep......eyes drooping so heavy. Like he was meditating :)
* Harley loved to go for rides in my truck. When I'd take him w/ me, he'd start out in the backseat. When I'd come back to the car after doing whatever it was I had to do, he'd be in the drivers seat, facing forward like he was getting ready to drive. This made a lot of people stop and laugh (I'd catch them cracking up as I'd approach my car). It made me laugh every time!
* He loved to bury his head in the covers when he slept. If he fell asleep w/out his head under a cover.....I'd cover his head up and he'd just groan in delight.
* He loved his walks. LOVED THEM. When I'd ask him "Do you wanna go for a walk".......he'd pace frantically and bark and bark and bark.........telling me "Yes, yes yes"!
*He never growled or snapped at anyone/anything. Not another animal, person, nothing! He was a gentle giant (all 80 pounds of him).
* He loved his "flappers" rubbed. Those slobbery jowls! Loved when I rubbed them for him.
* He was the best kidney-beaning dog ever! It never failed to crack me up.
* He loved the snow. He would leap high into the air to catch snowballs. And he'd race around the yard in circles, like a mad-dog.
* His favorite playdates were with his cousin Shadow (Shadow went to the Bridge in Oct.06, so he's w/her now) and Taylor. Taylor misses him :(
* EVERYONE loved Harley. Even non-dog lovers and people who were afraid of dogs. He had a way w/ everyone.
* When our heater would go on in the family room (during the winter), he'd plop down RIGHT in front of it. He loved it. I always wondered how he didnt ignite into flames!
* When he'd crawl up next to me on the couch and put his big head in my lap. He did this a lot as he got older. But I think his favorite buddy to do this with was my dad (his Papa). For some reason...........he loved sitting next to my dad on his favorite couch (where the sun would shine in).
*He would find the tiniest piece of sun shining in the room and lay in it. In the summer, when it was warm.......he'd spend all day just laying in the sun.

Well, thats all for now. I miss you buddy!

Although Harley had to leave, he will always love you for the affection and love you showed him. He is with my Bogey, playing with balloons and bubbles. I hope you find peace in knowing that he loved you and thanks you for each day in his life.
