We have always taught our dogs "out of the kitchen". They are never allowed in the kitchen when I am cooking, not only to keep them from thinking they are going to get something but also so they don't get burned by splattering grease. We have taught them to go to the carpet off of the dining room. They can still see us but they aren't sniifing and begging and know they aren't going to receive anything. The only time we allow them in the kitchen is when we are getting ice. Everytime they here the ice machine they come running and both get a piece of ice. I'm not saying Micah wouldn't steal something if he got the chance but we make sure he doesn't. We never leave anything on the counter that he might think is good. Jigs is to tiny to get on the counter. I even make them stay on the carpet by their dog dish when I am preparing their meal. It might help you to find a place where your dog can still see you while your cooking but not be under foot. I don't even let small children in my kitchen when I'm cooking, so it seemed natural not to let the dogs in. Stems from my childhood. My older sister pulled a pot of hot oatmeal on top her her when she was 3 or 4 and still has scars on her shoulders to this day. Mom only had her back turned for a second and bingo. If a child can be that quick just think how fast a dog can be.
