On 7/25/2011 at 5:45 PM my best friend of 10 yrs was pronounced DEAD! His kidneys had failed him. He has been fighting kidneys since he got stones a couple of years ago and had a drastic surgery to extend his life with us. He was the greatest dog I could ever have asked for. He was a beautiful fawn boy named Lieutenant.

I got the dog in my early 20's and he's been with me into my early 30's. He's been through so much w/me over the years between moving house to house in my being young and unstable and watching me grow into the man I am today. I wasn't always the 'best' owner in the world like when I used to give my dog beer and hamburgers from McD's. But he was a very spoiled dog for sure and I was dedicated to him!

I'm not a constant poster on this site but I had found it when I was inexperienced and young and had no business having a dog and this site was so helpful in helping me understand what to do. Like kenneling I thought that was a bad thing until I read on here the dangers of not kenneling sadly after my house had taken a beating more than once. So I would like to thank all of you kind intelligent people who offer so much needed advice.

On Monday evening Lt. was put to sleep. I got to hold him for the last hour of his life and he died in my lap as I laid on the floor with him and sang amazing grace. It pains me to write this but I really wanted to put it somewhere that I can always go back and read. So as I sit at this computer and type so many years in a few paragraphs with my eyes watering I just try to remember that I was given 10 great years with a great dog that has taught me so much. Good bye my best friend I know you'll be at the cross roads waiting for me with a tennis ball in tote.

I am so sorry for your loss. Just from reading your post, I can tell how much you loved him. We as humans are given the responsibility of ensuring their safety and well-being, as you saw to it. We aren't perfect, but they love us anyway.

I hope you are able to find comfort in the good memories.

That was a beautiful tribute to Lieutenant!! Doesn't matter how perfect we are, we are always perfect in their eyes. Your boy was loved until the very last second and you were there with him until the end. I hope the good memories will be a comfort to you.

That was a beautiful tribute to a wonderful dog. Lieutenant knew he was loved and cherished for every second that he was with you, and that's what matters.

I hope happy memories will soon replace the sadness you are feeling.

I am so sorry for your loss. We all do things, then look back and wish we did better. It is called learning and gaining wisdom. The important thing is you loved Lieutenant. I hope your memories will soon bring smiles instead of sorrow.

we love our babies!

I am so sorry for your loss! I recently lost my girl keesha on July 8th also. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor and I also couldn't let her suffer! She crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully and I know they will all be there waiting for us with waggy stumps!!! I appreciate all of the support I found here and am so glad to see others who would go to the ends of the earth to care for their pets as there are way too many who don't get the love they need and deserve! Take care and rest assure the memories will always bring a smile to our faces!
