One thing i will have to say is....We are all quite passionate about our boxers and wanting them and loving them!! If this post does not prove it.....i don't know what will....
We should rejoice that we all have a diehard love for these animals and THAT is our commonality!! With that being said....we are also quite diverse individuals with lots of different perspectives and experiences!!!
I have quite the take on rescue.....on the bad side....the first time we tried rescue was to get an english bulldog of eight years....we were SO excited and anxiously agreed to meet the dog almost three hours away....during the 'phone' interview...we were asked how much did we think we planned to spend on this dog in the first year( a normal question)...and when i replied between $1000-$2000 we got lambasted with mean spirited comments and the 'what if she needs hip replacements, heartworm treatments....ect.....To be honest i had never thought about it and felt so bad i withdrew our application and cried! She was not nice and was rather rude and implied that 'poor people' should not be taking on older dogs with problems.....Let me be the first to agree!! I had no idea she had problems and was glad to have had someone be honest....yes she was rude and yes she blunt and to the point....at first i was angry...but quite honestly....not everyone is perfect and i probably could not do her job worth a d---
On the good side....I am SO GLAD we did not get her because i would not have had the fantastic experience i did with the rescue we went through (and now volunteer with) and would not have my precious clumsy blockhead Telmar(he is eating a box right now!)....some things are just meant to be and I would not change a thing!! I DID get the perfect dog and worked with some incredibly unselfish people who rearranged their schedules both for the home visit AND when we announced we wanted to come and get him at 11:00 pm the night we were told we were approved!!
All in a nutshell.....to me...rescue is a wonderful thing....kind of like a relationship.....we all want one so perfect to add to our lives....you just never know what you are going to get!! Some people are nice and some just get the job done.....Its the boxers in the end that we will remember...not the people who were less than enthusiastic for US!!
Be patient...forgive nastiness and hope for the best!!

TDave is gone so let's get back to the point of this thread. :)

I think that's probably for the best. I was thinking about this thread this morning and some aspects of it were upsetting, but ultimately I know that the vast majority of BoxerWorld members are VERY supportive of rescue.

Count us among the supportive! We'll definitely be looking into rescue next time. I think the work you do is amazing. I'm thankful everyday for the people who care enough to save these dogs lives. Rescue truly is a labor of love.

We'll be looking to volunteer in the near future!

Finally got an email!

As you can see from the previous threads, I did take MyRockey's advice and ignore Tdave ( He scared me!) Anyway, today I got an email from one of the rescues and they received my home inspection review and are in the process of looking it over and trying to find me the perfect match! I was so excited that I all I responded to them was "Yeah!!!" I can only imagine the work that goes into each and every rescue. I know how much work and preperation I have gone through just to apply. I have understood right from the beginning what a timely process this is because they are so thorough. That is why I am going this route and changed my mind about the shepherd in the shelter (although I feel so bad for him). I feel more confident in the rescue that I am going to get a nice dog that I can trust and know more about. I give the rescue people alot of credit for taking these strange dogs into their homes and working through all of the tough things everyday until that dog is ready to be placed. They deserve all the credit that the people on this chat have given them and more!!!! I will keep you all posted when I hear anything - I can't wait! Thanks everyone for the encouragement to be patient and wait it out!

Wow. I just spent my lunch break reading this post. I forgot to eat! LOL Anyway, I had a bad experience with rescue but now I have a much better understanding of why. I rescued a dog that had major problems. Hundreds of dollars later at the vet (the day I took him home) he had to be put to sleep in my arms. I was devasted. I've posted this before so some of you may be familiar with my story. Anyway, my husband tried desperately to find me another dog. We called every place in the state we could find. Mostly, the mailboxes were all full. We never (to this day) got call backs from any that we did leave messages with. I was very upset about it. Now I realize that the rescues need more help. Maybe all those calls are for a specific puppy, I don't know, but I figured heck, all the dogs are all set since there are so many calls, I may as well buy one. I have certainly changed my attitude since but that's how I felt at the time. Now I know that I need to get involved to help. I now work full time and attend full time night school and have my two pups and two teens so the time is not right. But, I finish my degree in less than one year and I can't think of anything more important that I could do with my time than help out a rescue. Thank you, everyone, for opening my eyes. And I'm so glad to see that even though things got heated on this thread, everyone realizes it's because of the passion we all feel for boxers and any other dog. Volunteers - you are awesome! Good for you! And thanks!
