Thank you so much for these threads! My husband and I just had this discussion a few days ago. I am all for altering-he isn't. He was ok with it until we got Boomer home and he is just such a beautiful dog. He said sort of the same things-"we could make alot of $$$$ off of him, he would make pretty pups, etc, etc." Normally our decisions are 2-sided, however I put my foot down with this one and told him Boomer was actually my gift, I picked him out and I would do what I thought was best for him and the rest of doggydom. Thank you for backing me up.appicon

just jump on a few of the rescue websites and show him all the dogs on there and then ask him "how would you feel if one of Boomer's puppies ended up in one of these situations?" it's just about education, I had no idea how many dogs were in rescue until I started doing rescue. It was then I realized how important neutering and spaying are.

The value in our pets is the love they give. Period.

No dog has to be bred to give us love. Although, from a guy's point of view, they are usually hoping that is the end result to a date :D

(did alot of dating to come up with this fact)

I am a new member. We have 2 furbabies and we paid a mint for them. After we got our Baby Boy he fell in the pool and them came down with pneumonia. That was several hundreds of dollars and now we are getting ready to altar both our baby girl and baby boy. ALL I ever hear from anyone when they find out we have a boy and girl that are not liter mates is " When are you going to breed them?" I did not get them to turn them into puppie factories. I don't think it decreases their value. My son just had Brain Surgery, I don't think he is worth any less, why would it them worth less. They are part of our family, not just a possession.smashicon

I am glad to read posts from others who share my point of view on this subject. I used to bite my tongue when people came over and told me I was stupid for neutering Mason. Now I refuse to allow someone to come into my home and tell me I'm stupid. When I politely tell them that we got Mason with the sole purpose of adding another member to our family they look at me like I am crazy. After the 'he's only a dog' comment I let it fly! I add to the point for them to look at all the discarded dogs in the world and that was one of the biggest reasons I had Mason altered.

I did consider breeding him and weighed my options carefully. I then went to my vet, they have been my family vet for 25 years, and asked their opinion. They were very candid and honest and after weighing the health benefits of neutering I decided I didn't want to take the risk with Mason developing testicular cancer or something else. I made the appointment immediatley and had Mason neutered.

If you add the cost of the shots, food and, most importanatly, your time it comes out to a very discouraging figure. I don't know why everyone who thinks you'll make a ton of $$$ breeding. The stud fee I would get for Mason isn't worth the risk of losing him too young. I would also like to leave breeding into the hands of the experienced so the breed is not ruined by my ignorance. Too many breeds have been ruined as a result of careless breeding.

Sorry for the long post but this is a very touchy subject in my home. Thank you for listening!

Adding a my little piece to the subject too!

I just told the neighbors to the left of us yesterday about my boxer. So today, after being cooped in(or around) the house for 3 days, my mom and I went to a store to get some stuff and saw these neighbors there. I've learned to pay these particular people no mind to just about anything they say so this didn't surprise me.. (Husband and wife we saw) I was talking to the wife and then the husband came up and said "I'm gonna get me a male and we can breed'em." I immediately said "Nnoooo, never. I'm getting her spayed when possible" and proceeded to say "well you can't make any money like that. We can make a lot of money" and gave this grin2icon as a smile-Not Amused:mad:. I just said no and told them I'd see them later. For heaven's sake, I've only had her for a week and I've gotten the dreaded pit bull thing once and the breeding thing a couple of times smashicon I guess I will have to take it in stride, but it is nothing compared to the love and joy I get from my baby Paisley. Nothing could diminish the value of our furbabies..they have unseen value to us that the rest of the world doesn't pick up on:rolleyes:.
