I ruined my dog! (Long)

I just have to vent a little -- well, a lot. I went to get gas today and took my girls with me. The man that works there has seen Princess many times and always comes over to play with her. Well, this was the first time that he has seen Emma. He came over and was telling me how pretty she was. Then he ask me if she was spayed. I told him 'yes' and then he told me that I 'ruined my dog' because she's so pretty that she should be bred. I was furious. I told him (not so nicely) that I rescued her from a pound and that all rescues I have ever looked at require you to spay/neuter your animal if it is not already done when you adopt them (otherwise this place will fine you until you show proof). He told me that if it had not already been done then you could get away with not doing it and that he would have found a way. I told him that breeding is a huge responsibility and there are many things to consider and do before breeding. I also told him that Emma has too many health problems to be bred. I told him that she had a prolapsed uterus when I got her, she has generalized demodex, and also has bilateral hip problems. He then ask me where I got Emma because he was looking for a dog and was considering breeding (needless to say, I DIDN'T tell him). Then, before he walked away he told me again that I 'ruined my dog'. It is people like this that are the reason that there are so many dogs in shelters. They breed dogs without knowing anything about it or without doing health testing; so when/if someone takes one of the dogs into their home, once they find out all the health problems that have been passed on they don't want the dog anymore. It also adds to the number of dogs that end up being abused/neglected because these kind of people don't really care what kind of home the dogs go to because all they want is money. I was just sooo mad. I love Emma, despite all of her health problems (which don't bother me at all, because I will be there to work through all of them with her). I would not breed her even if she didn't have health problems; however, I do know that she is not 'breed standard' and should not be bred.

(He also told me that his friend had a dobie that he wanted to use as a watch dog. Since the dog never seemed to attack anyone, he hit his friend's dog on the nose to see what his reaction would be. Of course the dog went after him and then he had the nerve to tell his friend that if he didn't want his dog hurt that he'd better get his dog away!! Some people are just so ignorant and should not be allowed to have or even be around animals!)

Maybe somebody should hit him on the nose and see what kind of reaction they get. I bet he wouldn't like it either.

Some people don't care how a dog is treated, especially if they can make money on puppies. Some of it is ignorance, they really don't know about all the health problems and stuff. I was never a BYB, but I didn't know that there were guidelines and health tests, etc that go along with reputable breeding. Some people also think spaying/neutering is cruel and don't see the health benefits. And then again, some people just don't care.

Maybe you opened his eyes. Good for you for telling him how it is!

People always say it is 'such a shame' that I had Zoey spayed. And when I try and tell them the benefits, their eyes seem to glaze over, and you acn see them thinking "I would have bred her". A few have even said it would have made her a 'nicer' dog if she had had a litter. I personally can't imagine a nicer dog than Zoey!!! She likes everyone/thing! It's too bad people are still stuck in the old way of thinking.

Grrrr...you should have told him that not spaying can "ruin" a dog and that breeding any dog (regardless of the breed) that has not been health tested and proven to be of superior breed standard "ruins" those future pups and the breed in general! Some people should be neutered if you ask me to be sure they don't breed and spread their ignorance and stupidity!!!!!

That just irritates me! I have gotten that from people about Ginny. Everyone said she would have such beautiful puppies . . . etc . . .

The thing is--you aren't ruining your dog, if anything, you are saving your dog. Not getting them spayed puts them at risk for many illnesses and the potential for poorer health in the long run. Not to mention the potential risks during and after pregnancy!!

Some people should not be allowed to have dogs!! I agree with Sandy's mom--someone should punch him in the nose and see how he likes it. If he hit my dog to see how it reacted, I think he would have to be more worried about my reaction than my dogs!!

Don't mess with our babies!!!

Bah .. I receive the same comments "Oh, why did you spay her?" or "Why did you neuter him? .. You are so stupid for doing so!"
Stupid? Since when people are "stupid" for caring about their dogs?
Both of my babies are spayed and neutered not only for healthy reasons (for example Diesel had mange :/ - so we sort of didn't make a choice here ) but because so many dogs end up in a shelter. I love my babies and I think this is one of the best things I have done for them.

Ignorance is NOT always BLISS

It's amazing that people can stick not just their foot but their entire leg in their mouth and continue to talk trash.

Well I've already ruined my Westies life and Bruno's life is going to be ruined in a couple of weeks. And I'm proud of it.

Fair play to you for telling him. More people should be like you

People have the most ridiculous views on breeding. I know a woman who wants to breed her male lab so she can collect stud fees. She doesn't put any thought into the puppies that will be produced or the fact that she's contributing to the pet overpopulation problem. Trying to get her to see reason is like talking to a post. Sadly, there are people like her all over the place. Hence, the problems we see with dogs being turned in to shelters left and right.
