When Pearl is in the house she does not wear her collar. If you have multiple dogs that like to wrestle a lot it can be dangerous if one gets their jaw caught in the other dog's collar. Also a dog should never wear a collar when it's crated as it could get caught and it chould choke.

I am the same... Cash doesnt wear a collar when he is at home or in his crate. We only put his collar on when we take him out. We have done this since we brought him home and it stuck ever since

I think that all the posts are great ideas, and it sounds to me that most everyone is backing you up on this one. I think it is a great idea to get involved in that way.
I totally agree that time/money spent on owning a dog is a huge issue (which I guess also goes along with euthanasia problems) that people don't consider before buying a puppy. Too many people buy a dog without proper research and because their kids think the little puppy is so cute. It makes me so sad to think that those little puppies may end up getting neglected.
What a great way to spread the word that we all talk about everyday on this website. I am so thankful that I have BW as a resource! Thanks everyone!

Toss...Since you're going to be short on space and long on content/pictures how about shortening everything and adding a website below each list? I might not be explaining this correctly but say for example when talking about food have a line or two that states something along the lines of "many skin problems/allergies are solved by feeding better food or food without corn" "there IS more than price difference between dog food"
Then you could list the world dog journal (i can't remember what it's called!!!) website. Maybe add that Iams website that tells how the company had all those animal experiments going on (bad bad bad Iams!!!!)

If I come across any other sites, I'll let you know.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned but another very important item for any dog owner is training.
The owner needs to learn how to properly train their dog with positive methods.

I really like this idea, never even thought of that. I think that will work out good for the handout but I will need to do something different if we can get something into the paper, I dunno, maybe that will work in the paper too?

A good book to suggest to famlies with children is "Living with Kids and Dogs Without Losing Your Mind." It's got alot of info in it. Like warning signs and triggers for biting. Along with training tips, food suggestions, etc...

I really take my hat off to you for doing this. Not many people will actually proactively inform others. Good on you.

And especially younger people who sometimes are very niave when it comes to owning pets.

I would definately use a link to somewhere like petalert.com. That site has great infomration on all sorts of ailments and it has lots of links to other research sites too.

Good luck with it.
