Hello Everyone,
I've never crate trained a puppy and I have read 3 different books about crate training but none of the books give the finer details. Lacy is 8 wks. #1. When she falls asleep outside her crate is it ok to pick her up and put her in her crate? I've been doing this then close crate door & lock it until she wakes up & immediately take her out. #2. Today we just put her in to try to get her used to it when she isn't sleeping. She whimpered and made yippy sounds, today I heard her "woof-woof" for 1st time - when she makes those noises I tell her "Shush, or Hush". Should I ignore her completely or am I giving her negative attention with my "Shush". #3. When she stops (do I immediately take her out or do I wait 5/10 min of complete silence from her before I take her out? (What she does is make her noises and she might pause 4/6 sec & start again and doesn't really stop - so during that pause between 4/6 sec is that considered a good stop then I can take her out? Sometimes when she whimpers & yipes I'll go to the floor next to her crate & try to distract her with her chew toy so she won't yipe but should I be even doing that? What I'm thinking of doing is putting her food in her kong inside her crate w/ sliver of cheese (she loves stick cheese); I've been putting her kong outside the crate on floor so maybe I need to put it inside so she learns to like the crate. She is fine at night. Its during the day during her more active time frame when she isn't sleeping. I'm not sure we are doing it right. I think the longest she has been in crate longest is 3/5 min cuz she yipes & whimpers so much. Sorry for long post. We just got her this week and want to try to do it right & not mess the training up.

We are removing her collar whenever she goes in crate; I learned that tibit from BW so we are good on that. Ok, so sounds like we are on right track. Maybe its too soon to be closing door on her. She is awesome at night no problems there. My hubby does play w/her & throw her toys in there. Also, I'm gonna start throwing some of her little beef jerkies in her crate & praise her with door open. Thanks! :P

when we first got our puppy, we would feed her all of her meals inside the crate. we would put the bowl in there so that she would have to go in to eat (but we'd keep the door open). when we were playing, we would throw her toys in there so that she had to go get them and would also occasionally throw treats in there without her knowing so she could discover them on her own. anytime we put her in there otherwise, she would get a treat and praise (unless we put her in while she was sleeping). never thought we would get to this point, but she LOVES her crate now...anytime we are just relaxing at home, she goes straight in there to take naps and rest. sounds like you are on the right track - the key is consistency!

Just wanted to update everone that Lacy is doing better in her crate training, she can stay during day for 1 1/2 hrs with no problem, the most we ever went was 2 hrs (was doing housework). Your postings encouraged us and your advice helped. Of course, I am home with her so my presence was still around her even though she was in crate. She really isn't old enough for us to take off & leave her for 1 1/2 hrs but she is okay with me popping in the bedroom/computer room etc. where she can't see me. Go Lacy-Girl!!! :)
