Before saying any more, let me say that our girl has been to the vet, as she regularly does. And it is because they couldn't pinpoint the problem and any solution that I'm asking for the help of whoever may have faced a similar situation.

Our girl is 18 months old. She wheighs about 32,5Kgs (roughly 40 pounds, I think). She has always been, or seemed healthy.

She has had her second heat period three months ago. We did not allow her to get pregnant, since the vet said she was still in a developing stage. She then developed a false pregnancy and had to be given Galastop to eliminate the milk she had produced.

A few days later, she started vomiting, not wanting to eat, crancky regarding our other dogs and isolating herself.

Took her to the vet, he thought it was something wrong with her stomach, prescribed Primpéran. As she remained the same on the following day, went back to the vet. He ended up doing blood tests and found out she was in renal failure. This was last Friday. She had to remain there for the weekend taking serum, to force the kidneys back to work.

Yesterday, she had new blood tests. The BUN and CREA levels were almost the same as on Friday. She has a BUN level of 102 and a CREA level of 8.4. He told us to bring her back home, change her diet to the same our older Dogue de Bordeaux has because of her kidney problems (Royal Canin Renal RF 16), but, although he didn't want to say it, he is not very optimistic about her chances.

As anyone experienced a similar problem?

I have been researching, and the most likely causes would be JRD (Juvenile Renal Disease) or CRF (Chronical Renal Failure), but she is lacking some of the symptoms and, as I've said, she has always been healthy and nothing pointed towards this. Her coat remains shinny, she is not loosing hair. Apart from the vomits, and the crancky mood, the only abnormal thing is that she shrivers a lot while sleeping or resting (but not always).

Please, can anyone help me, or know anything that might be useful?

Thanks in advance

First of all why is she not spayed? If she is 18months old...just curious..I have had kidney problems all my life as did my father and after 9 years on dialysis he past...anyway does her mother or father have any kidney problems? It usually is found in the family? Sending healing and healthy vibes to you baby! <<<Hugs>>> to you!

Has the vet checked her for pyometra? If not, I'd suggest a very quick trip back there to check it out/rule it out. Pyometra is a potentially fatal infection of the uterus and is a risk following every heat cycle. From your description, the timing is about perfect for that to be the cause. Is she drinking and urinating a lot?

Pyometra does not always have obvious external signs, such as a vaginal discharge. It will show elevated white blood cell count in a blood test. Pyometra will, however, end in renal failure and the death of the dog if not treated quickly. Treatment must include antibiotics and ovariohysterectomy (spay).

Here is a short article on pyometra: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1629&articleid=918

I have no experience with this, but sending your baby healing vibes. Maybe you should get a second opinion from another vet? Hope everything works out for her.

I'm so sorry your girl is sick!

I would suggest getting her spayed as soon as she is well to avoid this problem in the future!

Has she been around any grapes or raisins? THey have been known to cause renal failure in dog for no apparent reason... I would also try another vet to get a second opinion

She is not spayed because we wanted her to have offspring, but only after she was fully grown. Our idea was to let her get pregnant on the third heat (within 3 months) and then spay her.

Went back to the vet and asked him about it. It turns out he had already checked for this and had ruled this out. Thanks, anyway.

Be very careful, if she has a pyrometra this is very bad..it is fairly common with intact females and it will kill her...please take her to the vet...is she feeling better?? Sending slobbery kisses...
