I'm glad to hear your pup is doing better and I hope he comes home soon. I know how hard it is to leave them in the care of someone else. I too have had to get emergency care and had to listen to the vet's office recording to get the number. Unfortunately they said it so fast I had to call back and listen to the whole recording a second time to get it all. Not something you want to do in an emergency. We've recently moved and thanks to your post I went online and got the emergency vet number and the location now before we need it. Hopefully I won't need it!

Accidents happen, but at least you had the foresight to recognize your pup needed urgent medical care and got him there ASAP! You're always going to feel guilty for that incident. It's a parent thing. I'm glad to hear your pup is improving.

HI Everybody..I am very happy to report that Capone is home and healing. His O2 levels were at 94% (good?) and was ready to be released yesterday. He is on a week of "chill time". Besides a little hitch in his step and 2 shaved patches on either side of his abdomen he seems well. I wouldve updated sooner but I was too busy hanging with the little guy yesterday after work.
There was however a kind of scary moment though. (perhaps selfish) When my mom and I went to Rockford to pick him up it seemed as though he wanted NOTHING to do with me. We drove him back to our -family- business and he greeted my sister, a friend and somebody else all with "kidney beans" and "snausage wagging". When I knelt down with him he fled to somebody else. Would hardly even make eye contact with me. As I had expected he lost his trust in me. I had to work so my mom took him home with her for the day. I spent the day super relieved that he seemed well but also a tad heartbroken. (again, perhaps selfish). At 5:30 I got off work and drove to my moms house. I pulled in to see him chasing down her 2 dogs (each over 90 lbs) trying to tackle them and fight with them. I was expecting him to be half comatose and here he was just happy as can be. When he seen me he bounded over to me just happy as a clam trying to kiss me and (ha) get under my feet (again...will he ever learn?)
So, in closing...after a few or the most awful days of my life ripe with guilt and panic all has seemed to work out great. He hasnt seemed to lost much, if any trust in me. He is active, he cant resist biting the cats tails and getting a face full of kitty paw. He is eating slightly less but that can be expected. He is a little ginger on the porch steps getting to the grass to potty but he manages and gets the job done. (It hurts him to be lifted). He has made (on top of the 500 other around town) plenty of new ladyfriends at the hospital. The whole deal wiped out my savings account but the piece of mind and joy of him being here makes the $900(US$) trivial. I really really really appreciated all of the kind words and thoughts sent out to my little boy. It has helped me get through this terrible ordeal.
It seems as though I've forgotten some things to say, so feel free to ask any follow up ?'s.
AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN (and as noted by GATORBLU, above) TAKE THE NEXT 5 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE...GET YOUR LOCAL EMERGENCY NUMBERS AND LOCATIONS AND PUT THEM WHERE YOU WILL ALWAYS KNOW WHERE THEY'RE AT. and hope and pray that the 5 minutes were a waste of time and you never had to use it.

We both thank you all 1 more time.......

Dogs are forgiving, especially when their mom makes a seemingly innocent mistake. I've stepped on Johann a few times (not on purpose), but he was a lot bigger than your guy (5-7 months old).

I'm so glad Capone is home and on the mend. We had a (less scary) ER visit with Johann when he was 9 weeks old for kennel cough/pneumonia. Scariest time of my life.

Thanks for the reminder about ER vet #s. I have the 2 local ones now in my cell phone and posted on our fridge.

I just caught this thread as I don't visit the health forums very often....too depressing. But I just wanted to say that I am so happy that you have a happy ending with your little man. Sending out some healing vibes to Capone that he may continue recovering so nicely.
