We do not have pictures on our ID except drivers license. I can use my birth certificate for ID, and my SIN card for ID, both with no picture, if someone had these #'s than they could say they are me!! You can walk in and get a job with a SIN #, they could get that job under my name!! You can also apply for memberships with this Id, pay cash..........they could use my name!!!

I think that's the problem! When I pay by check, I have to show my ID card that has my picture. There is also a picture on my driver license. No one can steal my identity as the ID card is always required for work etc.

Olly,

Over here it is VERY easy to make a false ID card. High School kids to it almost as a way of coming of age.

An ex-roommate once stole a pad of my checks as well as a couple of credit cards. She 2 solid months she had a party at my expense. She would bat her baby blues, flip her blonde hair and innocently say "I can't find my ID but I know the number by heart". They would melt and give her all she wanted :(

I would have beat her up... you now, like a fist fight? I never liked having room mates when I was younger, they were all bad.

Olly, they were going to introduce a similar ID card here, to be called the Australia Card. The "Privacy" police scared everyone into believing it was the first step to a Big Brother type society (which it may have been) and so it never happened.

Funny, what they were so scared of turns out to be the opposite in your country. Your privacy in a sense is protected because of that card. No one can pretend to be you and access information not meant for them (in theory).

Sounds like other countries are leap years ahead of us in many aspects...privacy being one of them!

I've watched NUMEROUS documentaries (Primetime, Dateline, 20/20, 48 Hours etc) about people having their identity stolen...it seems so easy and takes SO LONG to straighten out. (Usually not before your credit is screwed up beyond repair)

I don't know if its common practice now, but here in Ohio, they used to have your social security number printed on your drivers license and now if you don't want it on there, you tell them when you go to renew it. Also...if you write a check at a store, its a LAW that they HAVE to ask you if they can write your SSN on the check. I always tell them no. Its not something they HAVE to have. Do you know how many people look at that check by the time you get it back from the bank?? SCARY!!!

Even in practice I think it is hard to do a false ID card. It looks a little like a credit card with your picture on it and it is designed like a bank note. It can not be scanned and printed well.
