I can understand any anxiety you may be feeling. It was all new to me too. With all the info the breeder gave me, I'm sure she told me about boxer's predispositions to hystiocytomas.

If it makes you feel any better, Rommels lump tripled in a matter of a couple weeks too. I had to research hystiocytomas after the vet gave me the lab results. Her office never informed me that it's something that could "go away" on its own. She just wants the 350.00 to remove it.

Well, it's gone. Rommel doesn't have the lump anymore.

From my personal experience, it started as what a wart looks like, on the side of his paw. It grew and grew, until it started to bleed. That's when it starts to break down. A hystiocytoma can appear for 6-8 weeks. If it hasn't "run its course" by 8 weeks, they recommend having it surgically removed.

It appears, grows, bleeds, shrinks away. It's the oddest thing. I'm just grateful they're not painful or malignant.

Hope the info helped. I can't tell you what a relief BW is for me, especially as a new boxer mommy.

To Rommells mom

Don't feel funny about your opinions of your vet. This seems to be a constant problem with me. I spent 79 dollars on 3 bottles of drops for Lexies ear and 200 dollars in office visits. It finally cleared up and my vet reamed me for not bringing her in for the follow up appt. For him to say it looks good and that will be 50 bucks. No Thanks. BILL

My boy had a hystocytoma on the side of his back paw also. We had it removed in September. It was the size of a grape & very pink & iritated. OUr vet bill was appr $200 which included a path report. They also scared me with the possibility of cancer. But ours was benign. He had appr 6 stitches which was another concern. If the growth got bigger, the vet was afraid that there would not be enought skin to stretch back over the bone. Our recovery was appr 3 wks. I tried neosporin for several weeks prior to the surgery but the growth kept getting bigger. My boy is doing great now.

So glad your boy is doing great and his recovery went well. I took the Benadine route and the cyst is gone.

Hopefully that's the end of that. If not, I'll deal with it then.

Here's to their health.

Disappointed Mom

I just wanted to share my story about the histiocytomas. My boy (11 months) was diagnosed with one about a month ago and the vet was very pushy about removing it right away. Well, sure enough...i decided to wait a little while and the thing disappeared completely on its own. I am very disappointed with my vet and have started looking for a new one. It just amazes me how she never even mentioned that it could disappear, or even possible ointments that i could have used.

Willow had one too,

on her foot. It was tiny, but I took her in and my vet told me what it was and charged me 35 bucks- regular fee. I am not too keen on the vet you have- they are way too expensive and a little alarming. My vet also told me that the only reason they would take one off was if it didn't go away on it's own in 3 months or so. I didn't even treat Willow's, it just went away on it's own. It was about as big as a pea.

Hope this helped.

Lisa and Willow.
