Hyper Pup!

My dog is 4 months old and when company comes over or one of us gets home from work, it takes him forever to calm down! I realize that this is normal behavior for a puppy, but here is my question:

Will this behavior ever stop on it's own or do I need to train him to be calm? I just can't imagine how he will ever learn to be totally calm even if I work with him on it. I know I can train him to not jump. When he's calm, he always sits on command, but if I try to sit him while he's excited it's a hopeless case...

I have some friends who have VERY mellow dogs and they tell me that they never had to work with them much to achieve this. Their dogs have just been mellow from the start. Are they pulling my leg or are ALL puppies this hyper?

Thanks in adavance.

Hi:D

Just a thought ...

Our Nash is 2 years old, but we have only had her 2 weeks. When company comes, I keep her on leash. This allows me to keep her under my control, and insure that she sits when greeting new people. When our guests are comfortable, and Nash has settled down, I take her off. I hope that I won't have to do this forever, but it is a good training tool until she learns some manners:)

Keeping the dog on leash when company comes over is the best way to ensure that the dog remains seated and doesn't jump. This too can signal the dog to remain calm. It takes time since this is a normal greeting behavior for Boxers. Boxers constantly crave human attention and will jump and do most anything to get it. Other breeds aren't so "needy" of humans and may not respond in such a hyper manner as most boxers do.

There is a book called "Calming Signals" (you can do a search on this site for it and you'll find further information), which may be valuable to you in this regard.

This is one of the more difficult behaviors for Boxer owners to deal with, so it takes lots of time and patience to get over this particular issue.

Good luck.

hmm

When I get home and Chester is really excited, I take him out to go to the bathroom and when he is done I usually run with him around the yard for awhile so when he goes in he will just lay there and play with his toys. He gets reaaaaallly excited when there are lots of people over there but that is because they make him get all excited. I cant believe he is so excited in the morning, its almost like someone put a quarter in him!

I sure know what you mean about the hyperness. My little guy has 4 springs on the bottoms of his paws I swear. When he's not sleeping he's bouncing and being crazy all over the house foolicon I guess that's just normal puppy behavior, but for some reason I think boxers stay "puppies" longer than other dogs. This just makes them more loveable though. Keep us posted on your baby.

My little Candy, 6 months old, has the same behavior too. She is so so so excited when a stranger comes and keeping swinging her tail. I always try to calm her down by asking her to sit and wait, and she will sit for a moment only before continue to show this behavior. It seems to be the common case for boxer puppies and I think we need to be patient in bringing up him/her through their childhood.

I have the same problem my little tucker just gets so excited when we have guests!!! If he is really excited he jumps and wees but if he is only a tiny bit excited he just jumps. To stop this like everyone has said I just put him on a leash. However hopefully he will have to learn on his own how to control his bladder when he gets excited!

My only problem with putting them on a leash is now they think they are going for a walk and get even more excited!!

Brutus is the same way..He gets excited when people come over and I will put him in the bedroom til everyone is settled and then I let him out...he has gotten better since he now knows everyone that comes over..I do have a little nephew that is petrified of dogs(he does not have a pet). Brutus senses this and will go over to him twice as bad as he normally would. it's sad to see because the boy will scream and try to climb up his Mom...I guess Brutus wants to be liked by all....
