If a dog is running toward you to attack you or the dog, always place something between the approaching dog and the object (you or the dog), such as an umbrella, briefcase, anything. Put yourself between your dog and the oncoming dog. Take a step toward the oncoming dog and make very LOUD noises, waving and flapping your arms and causing all kinds of confusion for the oncoming dog. If he stops or hesitates, you can then run AT him and chase him away, or turn and walk away if he runs away from you on his own.

And yes, to break up a dog fight take the tail or back legs of the top dog, pull the dog's back legs OFF the ground and wheelbarrow the dog backwards. NEVER grab the dog's collar or you WILL be bitten.

Good luck.

Completely Boxer Crazy
I totally agree with Dan. When I was a kid I had to enter the house thru the backyard after school. My neighbors Border Collie was insane and would always jump the fence and bite me!! Usually he only tore clothes, but occasionally he broke the skin. It always scared the he!! out of me! After the 10th or 12th time my parents called the police. After talking to the owners (which did no good), the officer explained to me exactly what Dan said. Turn toward the dog making very loud noises, if the dog flinches, step toward it. Everytime I did this Crazy Chester ran back into his yard. He must have thought I went insane! :p

Sorry Jake is being attacked!! Give him a big ole hug from me, I can totally relate!!

Here in NZ we have exactly the same problems with dogs, especially in the parks!!!!
I never leave home without my tusty cattle prodder.
Whats a cattle prodder you ask?
Well its simply a long thin fibre glass rod with a rubber stopper on one end.
Farmers use it to give cattle a poke in the ribs to keep them moving especially while loading them onto trucks.

I use mine to wave about and scream at dogs that are about to attack mine.
Tell you what , theres a lot of dogs in our area who now steer way clear of that INSANE lady with the boxers!

I suggest arm yourself with something similar.
I have never had to hit a dog yet!
They always turn tail and zoom off! ROFL

I don't think it has a thing to do with boxers giving off the wrong signals, if each incident happened the same way, its purely because the other dogs were loose nothing else. You should praise your dog for not being the aggressor.

I had a dog come running for my dog once when my dog was leashed and I did exactly as some have said I got in front of my dog and said, "GET," very loudly. Now I usually carry the pepper spray in case.

If your dog is docked that does send off mixed signals, there's a lot of articles about it, this is just something to be aware of when we decide to alter the dogs for cosmetic reasons. All mine are docked and I do think it does cause some animal communication problems, with other dogs that have tails. I do like the docked tails though I have to admit.
