How do i stop a dog attacking

This morning i took my dog jake out on his usual walk and he was on his lead. Then around the corner came this cross breed dog who looked like he was on kill mode, he went straight for my jake and would not stop biting him ,i then lifted jake up but the dog was still trying to get at jake, while the other owner was trying to get hold of her dog i advised her to keep him on a lead from now on. Luckily jake didnt have any injurys considering this dog wanted to kill him.

Alot of dogs seem to be attcking my jake for no reason, why is this, do boxers give off the wrong signals?

And what is the best way to stop dogs fighting?

That’s terrible that a person would let an unsocial like walk loose :( I can’t offer any constructive advice as to how to break up a dogfight though…
I think Boxers are often attacked because their tails are docked. Dogs use their tails to communicate and when they don’t have one, they can’t send the proper signals like friendly greetings. Just a theory

Isn't tail docking illegal in ENgland?

I think it depends on the other dog's owner. They don't socialize them much and the dog becomes aggressive. That is just awful and I am sorry you had to go thru this.
I always try to make a big sound so that the dogs' attention will be somewhere else than the fight. Like hitting on the ground with a stick or my foot or a strong whistle etc.
I am glad that nothing happened to you and your baby.

I read in a book that if you are being attacked by a dog that (if they have a tail) you are supposed to pull it backwards, so they let go of you (or whatever they are biting) and then pick up their back legs and walk backwards, so they cant get you, I dont know if it works or not, but maybe, I wouldnt suggest trying it on a killer dog though, maybe try on a playing boxer (minus the tail part haha) to see if it works...just a thought... At least thats what it said in this book...(cant remember the name...like 101 training tips or something like that...?!?)

I am glad Jake is ok. Unfortunately there are so many irresponsible dog owners out there these situations do happen. A safe way to break up a fight is to grab each dog by their back legs and turn them around as you back them away from the other dog this way they cannot bite you, if there is only one person grab the legs of the main aggressor. Throw a glass of water or spray them with a hose usually works also. We have had several encounters ourselves with some not so friendly dogs whose stupid owners let them off leash, so now I always carry a citronella spray called Direct Stop just in case, its not harmful but dogs don't like it and it would interrupt a fight long enough to separate them.

Ive also noticed that alot of dime-a-dozen lab-cross' seem to like to "take on" my Boxer(s). Most of the time my girl(s) will far overpower the attacking dogs, and scare them away, but Ive broken up some real battles. Here's something I do, this works pretty much every time - pick up a handful of sand/dirt, and throw it in the eyes of the attacking dog - voila! fight is over, and the lab-cross is gone, tail betwixt legs.

Grabbing the dogs from behind? I dont recommend sticking your hands anywhere near them, Ive gotten a few stitches from trying that...Good luck, it can be a scary situation.

Well thank god I have never had this happen to me and Duke....but I do know that you are supposed to grab the dog or dogs by the back legs and pull back...this seperates them and they are not able to snap at you in the process...


Give Jake some big ((((hugs)))) and ensure him that not all dogs are out to get him !!!

If a dog is aproaching me and Rowdy, I try to put Rowdy behind me and step toward the aproaching dog. The dog would be less likely to attack a 200 lb man. If the other dogs owner is around, I would let them control their dog. If the dog is alone, it's easier to prevent a fight than to break one up by yourself. I don't like the idea of kicking a dog, but I would try to shove the other dog away with the bottom of my foot before they engage. It beats the alternative of breaking up a fight which could hurt either dog much worse. I've found a good bluff usually works. It's rare that a dog will mess with a human unless it is confined in some way.
