how to keep the boxer gas to a "minimum"

Im a newbie so im sure this has been discussed before - And in know that boxers have 'gas issues'. I just picked up my boxer from rescue - Thanks to the great people at Central Kentucky Boxer Rescue.

I was wondering what causes gas. And how we can keep it at a minimum? And of course I thought I would ask all of the brilliant people at boxerworld.

First, Congratulations on your rescue!
As far as gas problems, I think it's a "given" when it comes to Boxers:D But I think diet has a lot to do with it. Feed a premium food for starters. I'm sure someone else will know more. Good luck and many happy years with your new baby.

It may sound suprising but I havnt been able to find very much info on this subject....besides sales ads.
And the "search" brought up a whole lot of threads but I have to search through them to find out wich of the hundreds of threads actually address this issue.
I did a google search but only came up with sales ads for smell good products...(which i will look into)
But i was looking for some more naturally 'remedies'.

Premium food is a good start, but, Boxers are gassy - it's a fact of life. Yogurt (plain, fat free) is a reasonably good treatment, although it's unlikely to work if you have a "big" gas problem, and can create tummy upset since dogs don't do well with dairy in high doses. Acidopholous, available at health and pet food stores) sprinkled on the food is a better solution for bigger problems. It contains the same live cultures as yogurt, but in exponentially larger numbers.

The gas is caused by a combination of short digestive tract and the indemic flora (bacterial) that lives there.

Yogurt is good

but I have found that my scented candle purchases have risen immensely since owning boxers. I don't think there is anyway around the Boxer gas so you just have to learn how to compliment it with a nice scented candle

I think we must have 2 abnormal boxers. I hear all the time that boxers have a gas problem, well I'm here to tell you that our 2 never have.
Maybe we just got lucky.

i am not sure what you have tried so far, but our dog did have gas quite badly. i have raised his food dish to just under shoulder height, and it has helped a great deal, i say 80-90% less! good luck.

Maybe it has something to do with the way we feed Matt - Bax rarely has a problem either. :D Or, maybe we just have the kindest, most considerate dogs on the planet. Of course, Bax seems to only have problems at bedtime when he wants to be under the covers.
