Does anyone know the amount of water to give a dog based on its weight? I have a 7 mth old boxer who is peeing in our apt occasionally in the morning bc he can't hold it.

We sometimes go to bed from 9pm-6:30AM. Is that too long to expect a dog to hold it?

Since my puppy is in the crate during the day with no access to water I want to be sure he gets the correct amount of water before I pull the bowl at night.

If he is crated during the day with no water I would let him have as much water as he wants in the evenings. My 4 month old pup is also crated with no water in the crate but gets potty/water breaks every 3 to 4 hours. He also drinks and pees alot in the evenings but since he doesn't have free access to water during the day I let him drink all he wants at night..and yep-I do have to get up in the night to let him out.

As my boxers are not crated they have access to as much water as they want, I make sure the bowl is always topped up. I personally think that many hours is too long to expect a 7 month old pup to 'hold it' I think I would be getting up once to let him out :)

????????????????????????????????????????

I'm lucky if I get 4 hours!!!!!

Is your pup left alone all day, then again all night?

He should really have access to drinking water at all times.

He has two walks during the day while we are at work. Ive heard to take water away 3 hrs before bedtime which I don't like to do since we are only home for 4 hrs usually before we go to sleep. I am going to email my trainer but maybe taking him out once during the night isn't a bad idea. Although he usually can hold it from 9pm - 6:30AM

I don't think you should ever keep water away from a pup. Sounds like you may need to let him out around 11 pm or get up earlier to let him out.

Monkey isn't crated, but even when we leave her home for a couple hours we still leave a little water in her bowl so that she can have some. We don't let her have an entire bowl's worth, but we do make sure there is a couple stops worth in there so she doesn't get thirsty while we're gone. I would think that forcing the pup to be in a crate all day and then only 4 hours a day out, even with a walk is too much. Maybe you could look into a puppys itter during the day?

If he's alone all day then sometimes from 9pm ~ 6.30am that's quite a long time to be alone with no toilet breaks, that's probably why he's peeing.

There is no standard that has any relation to body weight. All dogs should have fresh water available to them at all times. If you prefer veterinary advice to that effect, here it is: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1661&articleid=716

As for how much the average dog may consume, that really depends on a range of factors - diet included. A dog that eats a natural diet (ie. a properly hydrated one) will consume far less water than one fed an un-naturally dehydrated diet - that it, kibble. Much as you would too, were you to consume a diet consisting solely of dry biscuits (as opposed to hydrated real food such as meat, fruits and vegetables). Thus, whilst in the former case a dog the size of a boxer might drink as little as quarter of a litre of water daily, it is not at all unusual for a kibble-fed animal to require 2-3 litres.
