How Many Teats?

I know that this is probably a stupid question but I want to know how many teats do male boxers have? My little boy has three "normal" sets and then he has two more (one on each side) nipple looking things on either side of his penis, and then two more tiny ones that look like "innies" high on his chest. This makes eight nipples. Does this sound right or are they something else?

Ooops! Sorry I guess I can't count very good today(Monday) Anyways three sets on each side plus the two down low and the two up high on the chest makes TEN!!! Now does it sound normal?

6

There should be 6. The others might be birth marks or his belly button! Don't worry I knew a human once with 3 once. Funny as heck but it can't hurt ya :D

You should be no more concerned to see nipples on a male puppy than on a male human baby. In short, it is perfectly normal. The difference between males and females is in nipple/breast development as they become adults.

As for how many - 8-10 is normal. It is also perfectly normal for the rear-most sets to be less developed than the fore-most ones. Take a look at any female dog (especially one that has not had puppies) and you will often see a similar front/rear size differential.

8-10 ?

Jboutin: Well first, THANKS for asking a dumb question I wanted to ask. I always thought dogs had ten. But my girl has 8 and I thought something was wrong and she was missing two or maybe it was a boxer breed trait.

GMACLEOD: Does this 8-10 range for all dogs - just boxers? MALE vs Female? Is there a preference for showing a female with less / more?

Actually the number of nipples rather depends on the size of breed - with smaller dogs tending to have less. Smaller dogs usually have smaller litters too - and nature does tend to base these things on need ;) The 'range' is generally 3-5 nipple pairs, although odd numbers aren't at all uncommon. As already stated, the difference between males and females is in nipple development - not normally in number.

The number of nipples a bitch has is absolutely irrelevant for showing purposes. It is not a part of the breed standard. Size doesn't matter either. I guess you could be really pedantic and say that as the purpose of showing is to assess potential breeding stock, there should be a check on how many nipples are present... but in reality, whether a bitch has 7, 8, 9 or 10 nipples is not a great issue in determining her suitability to be bred (and they're not always all used either).

I've never seen a judge do a nipple count :)

It's a non-issue unless there's a huge litter with not enough, but once you get past 8 pups you're probably already going to be supplementing them.

I've known a couple of male boxers (not mine) with VERY pronounced nipples, as large as those of a bitch in heat. I find that excessive size in males unattractive, but at least one became a champion. Probably just a family trait. My foundation bitch had prominent nipples long before she was in heat, let alone ever bred -- people always assumed she'd had puppies, but she hadn't.

Those of you with baby boys can rest easy -- whether 7, 8, 9, or 10, they're probably completely normal :)
