A pup away from home with the owner as the known reference point while not leashed will still push itself beyond it's limits. Yes, they can walk long distances, but it is the long term problems it can cause is why it is reccomended to wait.
It is like going to the dog park, if I did not watch the time, Jedi would play til he passed out and fell over, he does not have a built in limit switch. It is my job as the owner to watch how long and how he is doing, to end it when he needs to rest.
Now, my pup is 3 months and he does go on very short walks, and I only use them on days other excessive excerise has not happened (like playing with Emma or going to the Dog Park).
So, sure your pup can push itself unleashed, but long term I would still be scarey, depending on the length of your walks.
