How Long Did It Take You...

Mambo is not quite 12 weeks old - I have had him for 16 days. He appears to be trained at night time but not during the day. At night he sleeps in his bed on the floor beside my bed. I laid newspaper on the floor around his bed. He peed on the floor the first night (wooden floors so not too difficult to clean). Second night I heard him on the newspaper so took him out in time. From the third night on he wakes me up by reaching up to me in bed. He doesn't make any noise but I always wake up and take him straight outside (its freaky - I just feel his cute little face looking at me). This usually happens twice a night. No more night time accidents. After reading other peoples comments I feel very lucky that he has learnt this so quickly.

Not so clever during the day. Not sure why - he does go outside most of the time but at times he decides where he is is good enough. I am home with him 95% of the time so I take him outside regularly during the day and praise him when he does the right thing. I always take him outside as soon as he wakes up and he will always go then. We'll have to wait and see how long it takes him to learnt day time toilet training properly - he is half way there.

My last dog (staffy-mastiff-boxer mix) literally learnt overnight. He was approx 12 weeks old and had been abandoned. I got him from the pound. He messed on the floor the second day I had him and that was that - he learnt the word toilet within a couple of days and went on command from then on. Amazing!!

It took Tiki a good six months before she was house trained and another six months to hold it for longer periods of time. Here is a quick tip that someone passed on to us--if your puppy gets the hiccups, this usually means that it is potty time.

Well, I'm going to make all of you feel a lot better...

My boxer just turned a year old a couple of weeks ago and I'm just now getting the feeling that he is housetrained. His last accident was a few weeks ago. He'll still do it occassionally but I think he's finally got the idea down. He definitely wasn't housetrained at 10 or even 11 months. I have a slow maturing boxer. :o) But I love him more than life itself. He's definitely a momma's boy. He still is not left with free roam. He goes in his crate ANY time I leave. So I'm sure he would go inside if I left him out and alone long enough. Crate training is the greatest invention ever!

We got Shasta at 9wks in early Dec. and she was potty trained by the beginning of Feb. So about 2 months without any accidents. We bell trained her and it's been awesome! Sometimes she whacks that bell so hard as to say "Mommy HURRY UP!" I highly recommend Bell training.

Though I do have to say that she had an accident just this past 4th of July (9 months). She DOES NOT like fireworks and would not go outside for anything. Granted the neighborhood sounded like a battlefield. So she kept pacing from the kitchen to the living room, I thought she was nervous, and then she just squated. We caught her in the act telling her NO!, and she stopped and ran around like "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" so I had to drag her out on a leash for her to finish. Took her a min because she kept bolting towards the door. But other than that she's been great.

I used bell training and Edgar had it down in about 3 weeks but still had a few accidents until he was about 6 months old.
