How high should we go??

Mine have never showed an interest in jumping. We have a 6 ft fence. They have tried to dig but only to play with the Beagle next door who was digging first! :( Dozer intead tries to barrel his way through the fencing if there is a bird or something he wants on the other side! He's actually knocked out a board or twoo before, so we've had it re-enforced! :)

I think it depends...Harry has no interest in escaping :) We put in 5 ft. pool code chain link, thinking that it should be high enough to prevent him jumping over, and that he wouldn't be able to get a toe-hold to climb over. He has never attempted either. My mom has decorative fencing in her yard, about 3-4 ft., and he has never tried to get over that, either.

What a lucky puppy Sally is to be getting 5 fenced acres!

I think 6 foot would be fine... Gnarly jumped our fence a few times at the area which was a little over 4 foot... soon fixed that by adding lattice to that section! 10 ft fenced would probably be ideal but hard to say until the pup grows up... some wanna get out others don't.

Brewster's a jumper, Adrienne's a digger. Neither one of them have ever gotten out, but I know they could if they wanted to. Therefore, I never leave them unattended for very long. It is definitely varied depending on the dog.

Ray at a year old sometimes used to go over to our neighbour (4 ft fence, either under or over) to go play with the GS or steal their toys :D. But that was just a phase and he stopped.

Sugar once got over a 7 ft wall. We were in a panhandle (completely surrounded by houses aside from a driveway out - which the dogs didnt have access to) and she was just gone. After going around the neighbourhood looking for her - even though there was no way for her to get out - we went back home to find her looking at us through the next door gate. The house was empty and we had to get two ladders - one either side of the wall and carry her back over. We could never figure out how she got there till hubby saw her clear the wall again - chasing a cat !! Those were the only two times in her 10 years that she jumped, never before and never since. Our walls now would be a breeze for her, 5 ft in places. I think she was more intent on getting to the cat than actually getting over walls.

There also used to be a boxer on our road who used to dig under their solid wall. We were forever taking him back home.

I think 6-8 ft would be fine as well, as long as she is happy in her space and kept busy I don't think she would want to go anywhere

Thank you all very very much for the feedback. I think the husband and I might go ahead for the 4' to start and see how it goes. We'll just have to keep her busy and gradually add on if she starts getting curious.

If a boxer ( or any other dog) wants out, they will get out regardless of what you put up..... That being said you must carefully watch since you have a pup, if she starts bad behaviour ( digging under/climbing) you may be able to nip it in the bud......much easier than trying to train an older dog. Luckily for us , neither one of ours has any intention of leaving their "territory"....the gate could be wide open and Mason and Aspen would be standing there looking at us like " Yikes, there's a breach in our perimeter.....mom DO something quick!!!"

HAHA thanks for the giggle -
Bradlee is the same way. I think you would be fine with 4 ft. As any boxer owner can tell you boxer are companion dogs so she should not be outside running around by herself often. I also think with 5 acres - is she ever going to find the fence?
She is a pup and if you spend the time she will never want to leave.

Mika's a great jumper and I'm sure could easily clear 4 to 6 ft. high fence BUT she chooses not to jump. She also chooses not to dig.

Mika uses another tact--- she uses her big head and goes along the perimeter of the fence to find a weak spot (any spot that gives, even just a little).....then she simply pushes through.

Good thing is, she only does this if I'm not outside with her and when she does get through, it's to get to me :)
