We have 6' fences with a decorative top but this has been a concern of ours as well. Our neighbours boxer used to regularily jump their 6' fence to see what was going on in the driveway - Bruce jumps up but hasn't figured out the forward momentum thing :) and I hope he never does!! He easily jumps striaght up from standstill to about 7' the neighbours think we brought home "Tigger" and not a dog at all.

The fact that you are doing such a large area should help. We have 20 acers as well. All we have is 4 foot four board fence and we have been fine. That said I never leave with them out. We have a busy road by us but the dogs seem to know the boundries and are not bored so do not feel the need to wander. Either that or I am just extremely lucky.

I have two 9-month old boxers and 6' privacy fence. One of my boxers would never even think of jumping the fence. The other one jumps it every time I let her out. I just got done spending the last 8 days looking for her because she jumped the fence while I was at work and someone took her home with them. It was the worst week of my life. I definately reccommend getting your baby spayed/neutered and chipped asap. That sometimes helps. And if you don't have anything to entice your baby to jump out (for instance I have stray cats and other critters around my home) then maybe he will never try to. But I sure wish I could have put up an 8' fence! :) Good-luck.

We have a 4 ft. chain link fence. Sandy has never attempted to jump it. She's much more intent on keeping others out. :D

I witnessed my angelicon Blizzy climb a 6 ft fence!! She actually walked up it like a ladder!

I also watched my girl jump up about 4 ft from a standstill! No running start..she just jumped up.Friend was holding her toy up in the air and Blizzy just launched at it.

I'd say the higher the better. Some dogs, although totally able, never jump or show any interest in jumping, others will jump any height fence just because they can

We have a 4 ft fence around our pool area and neither dogs have jumped over, foreman is tied up when not supervised at the side of our house with 3 dollar stores leashes which gives him 60 ft he could easily chew thru, or break but he dosen' he is not an escape artist. Harley is not tied up if he is not in the pool area because he won't leave the door. We never leave our dogs outside if we are not home though!

Our fence is also 4' and they show now interest in jumping it. The actualy weak spots are the gates at our house.

Tula isnt interested in getting over our 4' chain link either. Now, she'll stick her cuz under it and whine until I get it and throw it to her but thats her trick to get me to play ball with her.

Honestly I think it depends on the type of fence and the personality of each dog. I have only a 4 ft chain link fence. None of my 3 goes over. I think because they can see through it, their curiosity is satisfied. If they wanted to, they could be over in a heartbeat. More than a year so far and none has even tried. I very rarely let them out there for any length of time by themselves. They are more diggers than anything but we cemented around the bottom of the chain link so they can dig to China and still not get out.
