Willie sits in front of our door. Sometimes if he is there for awhile, he'll start to wimper. He tricks me a lot though. He'll sit there and I'll take him out for no reason.
They really know how to work the system!

Olli goes to the door and whines if he has to go outside or sometimes he will come to me and whine 'til i get up to take him out.
Olli was about 6 weeks old when we got him and started housetraining and we knew we had to have some way to tell when he needed to go out to do his business. So i decided if he would whine then we would know he needed to go out. At that point he didn't whine at all. So i had to teach him to whine. His command to go out to potty is -Outside. So i would take him and stand by the door and say Outside and i would try to imitate a dog's whining sound. I did this every time i took him out to potty. As soon as he would whine i would open the door and take him out and give him lots of praise/treat. After a few weeks of this he knew if he wanted to go out he had to whine. I think this has worked well for us. I would definitely do the same with another dog or even maybe teach him/her to ring a bell by the door.

We have 2 boys. Biscuit started going to the door and hitting it with his paw to get out, and Earl just goes at the same time. Sometimes, if Biscuit doesn't let us know in the morning, Earl will whine until we get up and take them out. Biscuit used to just do it once, and if we didn't hear him, then too bad. Now he will do it until he gets out.

wow!

Wow! You all have been incredibly helpful, and also help me feel like we're not freaks :( with our problem --there are others out there feeling our pain!
What's interesting is that there seem to be two distinct categories- ones that have actually trained their dogs to make a sound or perform an action, and those animals who just kind of do an alert naturally.
We will definitely take the advice and add some vocal training since we dont have the "naturally occuring' variety.
Thanks Thanks Thanks to all!!!!!
