How do you restrain your dog while driving?

Isn't there a stat out that most accidents happen 5 miles or less from you house? Your trips might not be very far, but it's better to be safe then sorry IMO.

Thanks for the tip on car harness's. "charlie" loves to go for rides any time I can take him. If I'm alone he sits in the passenger seat - when Phil and I are in the car "charlie" sits in the back.
I think I'll invest in a harness now that he's growing and getting bigger and heavier.

I like this thread since I am getting a puppy soon. My question is can I put a harness on my 8wk old or should I use a crate when travelling? because we are always going to the park or visitng friends, so I was just wondering.

seatbelt works for ted

Since I have driven, ted is my right hand man when he can be and he loves sitting in the front seat. Because he sits so much like a little human I use the seat belt across his chest and he is as happy as a clam to allow it, as long as he has a window open to cruise for babes, he could care less. :D

We took the dogs on an 1.5 hour trip last weekend. Since I vowed publicly on boxerboard that I will harness my dogs for now on I had to do it. Even though it was more work then letting them freeride it was definately worth the effort!

We have the harnesses that have a loop in the back for the seatbelt to go through. My dogs kept getting all tangled up when they would turn around to look out the back window. They are definately not the picture perfect dogs that sit straight up and still while we ride.

I ended up having to sit in the backseat between the two dogs to keep them straight and help them out when they became tangled.I am sure I looked really stupid sitting with two boxers in the back seat while my husband drove :D

How is everyone making their harnesses work? Is there a preferred brand?

That's the experience I had with mine...she moved and turned so much she got all tangled up and I was spending more time getting her untangled than concentrating on the road! She has since settled and would probably be ok, but Hershey is a worry wart in the car now. I tried them both in the way-back of the suburban on the way to the vet yesterday and they both did great! Is that really THAT unsafe...even way back there??? :confused:

I used to have the kind with the loop that the seatbelt ran through. I also had to keep untangling them. So when I got my new jbpet magazine it had a new kind of seatbelt in it that has a strap on it that snaps in the seatbelt snap. It appears to give them enough room for movement, but they don't have the loop to tangle in. I'll let you know how they work when I get them

Please post again to let us know how the JB Pet seatbelt worked out. I was wondering if it would help with the tangles since it clips directly into the seatbelt. I don't want to make any more dog related purchases unless I get some good recommendations.

We bought the SUV just because of the dogs:rolleyes:

The back seat is always down, and they have some mats and toys back there. There is just not enough room for five crates (I foster) and there is no way to harness them with the seat down. I do worry about what would happen in case of an accident, but have absolutley no idea how to restrain that many dogs in the back of the truck.
They are not distracting, as they just lie down and go to sleep, but I am always extra careful because I know that they are back there, loose.
Any ideas?:confused:

Not restrained at all. Which does worry me some. If we are taking Ginger in hubby's pickup truck she will sit between us and she is fine. If we use my car, we have her sit in the back seat. Well, Ginger does not sit for some reason she prefers to stand on the seat. We constantly tell her to sit, but I think she prefers to stand to see everything that is going on.:p The last time we had her in my car, she decided to sit on the floor in the back, I just can't figure my baby out.:confused:
