I am so happy that you have decided to use a restraint for Princess, after reading my reply. Honestly, until I had this accident I truly never thought about using any type of restraint for Kailee to keep her safer. I cringe now whenever I see any animal riding in a vehicle without some sort of safety device. Like I said, fortunatly Kailee was not hurt, just very shaken up, but it was a lesson Well Learned by me.

Oh my! Wagner usually rides in the backseat of the car. He is very anxious in the car, so he usually just lays down quiety or sits down and doesn't move. However, I feel as if I should get a safety harness now! I don't want to have him hurt or die in an accident. Thank you for sharing your experience, Jean.

Do they have seatbelts that allow a dog to lay down? The only ones I've ever seen are the ones in which they have to sit straight.

I would never let my dogs roam around in the car while I'm driving, they're far too distracting and as I make my kids buckle up it seems only fair that they should too! The thought of what would happen if I had an accident or had to break suddenly makes me feel sick. They are always kept in the back of the car - well George is - Amber's too young yet to go out in the car as she's only 7 and a half weeks but as she gets older that's where she'll go.

Our dog sits in the backseat, we have quite a small car, so noone else couldn`t possibly fit in there whit him
He allways wants to put his head out of the window, drool all over the car, and let his ears flap in the wind :D :D

Kailee's harness and seat belt attachment gives her enough slack to lay down or sit up in the back seat. It took her a few days to adjust to being restrained, but now she sits and waits to be buckled in. I put it on her in the house before we go out the door, then just attach it to the seatbelt once she is in the car.
I found it sad really when I went to the petstore to buy her restraint. They were on clearance, so I asked why, as I did not want something that was being cleared out due to not being a good product. The store owner told me it was a good restraint but he was clearing them out as there was not a big enough demand to carry them anymore. Sad really when you think about it.

Jake and Josie ride in the Back seat (Dogs are not allowed in the front seat)

I had a harness when Jakob was a puppy, but he squirmed around so bad he got twisted in it and I had to pull over on the interstate and get him out of it before he choked to death.

I just got a Jeep cherokee and thinking of investing in Crates just for the back, or harness I can clip to the tie downs.

Princess and Mac both wear car harness when we are in the car. Mac used one from day 1 so he has never fussed about it. The vet tech are amazed at how calmly and matter of factly he stands for me to put it on him.

Princess took some getting used to, cause she was about 6 months when she started wearing it. Occassionally she'll whine like she is dying when she wears it. Complain complain complain! ;) Its usually when i'm not driving fast enough to the dog park.

There is no better 'mom' feeling then seeing both babies sitting pretty AND SAFELY for car rides. lovicon

I know is some states its illegal to let a dog loose in the car. New York is one of them and you could get a ticket if you are pulled over. I always harnessed Mandi until it got too small. Well today I went out and bought a new larger one. Lexi is also harnessed ( with Mandi's old one). I got alittle lax until I read the thread from Buddy's Mom. Now they will both be harnessed always just like my children are. Thank you for making me shape up!!!:)

I never knew! My husband and I have been pulled over with Wagner in the car, but it always results in a nice comment about him, no ticket.

Thanks for the info!

Funny you should write this post...

I have never restrained my dogs when riding except when they were puppies. My adult dogs have always loved to ride shotgun (in the front seat) and I let them when there is room and I don't have to worry about heat inside the car.

This week while riding I had to hit the breaks quickly and Blade bumped into the dashboard. He wasn't hurt and I wasn't going that fast....that being said I began to think about the what ifs...

I have decided to invest in a harness (seatbelt for dogs) That way he will be restarined and can still hang out with me on short car trips. I too would never forgive myself if he was seriously injured due to my negligence.smashicon
