Ok this is a sad story but you guys seem to be good at advice so here goes...

My best friend Kelly has had a very difficult life so far for a 22 year old. To start things off her and I only really became good friends after my family's home burned down last August, she showed her true colours and I definately saw she was a true friend, she stayed with me when I needed her to, brought me clothes and comforted me when I was all alone. A real friend. Anyways, when she was in highschool her mother who is a nurse was diagnosed with breast cancer (I knew Kelly at the time but had no idea all that was going on) after intense chemo which caused her to lose all of her hair she beat it and it has been in remission for a few years now. About 3 years ago Kelly started dating a young guy that she instantly fell in love with named Jason. They got along great, thought alike, talked alike and loved all the same things. I never met Jason although he sounded like a great guy. I had heard rumours through some friends of mine and Chris's that Kelly had a boyfriend who passed away. So one day I approached her (before we were really friends) and asked her "Kelly, I heard some stuff about you and a man, and I feel badly that you had to go through that, although if you don't want to talk about it, that its ok, I just wanted to set the record straight" Well Kelly had only been dealing with it for a few months at that point but she is a very strong girl (reminds me of me!) and she told me about him. He first got cancer when he was 16 years old, he went through chemo and it went into remission. He got it again at age 18 and again it went into remission. After that is when the met after getting to know each other they had "the discussion" and he knew it was likely that it would return and the doctors had already told him that he had little to no chance if it did return. After a few months he started getting cancer pains once again in his abdomen, he knew what it was but did not want to go to the doctor, and most of all put Kelly through that. Well eventually he had to go the pain became unbearable. Kelly (who wants to be a nurse may I add) stayed by his side through the whole thing, to the end. She initially helped him with his meds, then did all the housework and cooking and caring for him until it became so bad that he had to go to hospital into pallative care. To make matters worse his mother HATED Kelly. How anyone could hate such a nice person is beyond me, however I would assume that it is not Kelly that she hates it is more that her son was dying and Kelly was helping the only way she knew how, and that she hated the situation more than Kelly herself. Near the end Kelly slept at the hospital with Jason and he even asked her if she would marry him before he died but then decided that she was too young to be a widow. The story just breaks my heart because she would have only been 19/20 at the time and he was 21 I think. Kelly was with him at his side when he did finally die on December 23 2002.

Kelly and I became friends summer 2003, she talked to me that night for about 4 hours explaining the story and I said nothing, I just listened. She told me later that no one had ever just let her talk before. I could tell that it helped her a lot to get it all out. She lived in their apartment since he died and you could tell that she did not want to let go. It has been 2 years almost since he died and she is still hanging on so tightly I am concerned for her. I managed to get her to move out of that apartment by convincing her to move into the same building as me, so if she got lonely or sad I was just upstairs and that helped lots. I can tell she is still hanging on so much to him and it hurts me to see her like this.

She doesn't feel that she needs counseling for her loss, which I think she does. I cannot imagine losing someone close to you like that so young and not needing to talk to someone who can help rationalize things for you. She has gained weight since his death and although I have also gained weight since the fire I enrolled at her gym so we could work out together. She always makes excuses for not being able to go or not being able to "fully work out" and it is getting tiresome. Please dont get me wrong I think it is horrible what she went through but I can see that her weight is bothering her as mine is bothering me, and i am concerned that her health is on a serious decline.

I have talked to her about going to conseling and how much I am benefiting from talking to someone, and she keeps saying "well I know why I am sad" but at the same time she still has his clothes, his old meds, and things like that she can't get rid of.

She has taken small steps with help, and I can tell she wants to keep going but she really does compare EVERYTHING in life with her relationship with him, she hangs around old friends of his, as I said has his old stuff and I'm not saying get rid of everything but keeping his hair brush and old medicine seems to be self torture.

She has finally moved back home which is good because she can now focus on going to school to be a nurse, but again I am concerned that since she is still carrying so much baggage around she won't do as well as she could.

How can I help her? I am here for her as much as I can but I don't want be holding her to her past either. any advice?

Colly you are such a good friend. You and I both know she need grief counseling, but you also know you can't force her into something she thinks she doesn't need. All that will do is put a wedge between you, and she'll start to resent you. I don't know what advice I can give you except to keep being her friend and keep being there for you when she needs you. Hopefully she will come around and get the help she needs. She's too young to be this miserable for such a long time.

Be her support system. Just be her friend she will heal in time. Some people take a little longer than others. I am a certified Social worker and have dealt with a lot with Grief councelling I use to do it in local nursing homes. Although I don't do it anymore that just a whole other issue. But I can tell you this from my experience that she is holding on to something that she needs to let go and she will in time and move on. So for now be her support do not push because that will send her back to using her past relationship as a comfort and will not opt to cherish the old memories and move on to create new ones.
Once she heals her inner self (emotionally) she will be able to heal herself physically but one step at a time.

You are a great friend to care for her so deeply. I lost my mother at the age of 12 to suicide. I never received counseling....it was 1980 and "therapy" was NOT all the rage at that time. If it would have happened in this day and age I am sure that I would have been taken to see someone. I lost a 12 year old cat in 1998. To this day I STILL carry his last picture taken in my purse and have numerous photos of him in my house. When I lost him I did go into counseling....it was a sort of delayed reaction of loss....both of his and my mothers. When I lost yet another cat last april (she was 17) even though I was just as upset as losing the other I was better able to handle the emotions due to the previous counseling and what I had learned.

You can only suggest your feelings to her but can't force the issue. If and when she feels that she can't fight the grief on her own then I am sure that she will seek help. The fact that you are there for her is of great comfort to her I am sure. I know that being in a care provider role is very tiring but she just needs time to heal at her own pace. Just continue being there for her, it's the best gift you can offer.

You are a great friend to care so much for your friends well being. She is lucky to have you in her life and I am sure she realizes this. I do agree that she will have to heal in her own time. I know it is painful for you to see her hurting but it is the only way she can heal. If you try to push it too much than it will hurt your friendship. I hope she does go to talk with someone since it will really help her. I wish her only the best since she has gone through so much.

I'd say just stay by her side, and be her friend. She will need your shoulder to cry on for years to come I'm sure, just keep being there for her and eventually time will help heal the hurt. Poor thing, I lost a very dear friend about 4 years ago to cancer, and it's a really really hard thing to go through because it makes you angry that someone so young and innocent has to have their life torn away from them at such a young age. It's not fair, and it happens a lot to a lot of good people. It's just sad that we can't come up with a cure, cancer is such an awful disease.
Keep being there for her, and encouraging her to help herself and make herself happy. Maybe nursing school will help her gain more of a sense of importance, and can help her turn her own pain into helping others with theirs.

Colly...you are a truly devoted friend! I am sorry that Kelly has had to go through so much so soon. All that you can do is still be her friend, be there for her. I would definitely continue to encourage her to seek counseling, maybe ya'll could go to some Grief counseling together. And it is possible that she doesn't want to "let go"...she may want to hold on to their life inside of herself...which is totally unhealthy. But I would have to agree with you, it's time for her to snap out of it, and move on with her life. Go to her house and get her and say "we're going to the gym...and I won't take no for an answer"...or "we're going to the movies"...so on and so forth. Get her out of the house. She's marinating in her sorrow, and it's taking hold of her. She's got to get out and do things, she needs to realize she can still have a life, that she can still have fun. I have recently left my BF of 14 yrs, and I jump on any opportunity to get out of the house, because if I sit here, I'll dry up! And that's what she's doing. I say start by getting her out of the house at least once a week, and go from there. Maybe when she sees that she can still have fun w/o her bf who passed, she'll want to start coming out of her shell. Good Luck and keep us posted.
