How do I get him to ask to go out?

I know there is probably a post on this somewhere but I couldn't find it searching, so I'll ask.
How do I get Jack to ask me to go out (paw at the door, bark, get his leash, something). He's 13 weeks old and has, on average, one accident a day. I think it's mostly my fault for not being able to tell when he needs to go out. Before he has an accident he usually walks up and stands in front of me to do it! I just say no and grab him midstream and carry him outside (he stops when I pick him up and finishes outside). The problem is I can't tell the difference between coming to me to play and coming to tell me he needs to go out. Does any one have a technique to suggest that would ecourage him to ask in a way other than peeing on the carpet? Thanks!

I'm so glad you asked! I was just getting on here to ask the same question! Willy was doing fairly well (we got him a few days before his 6 weeks mark and he had an average of one accident a day), now he is having MORE accidents and I don't understand why - I'm sure it's my fault. He is only 9 weeks old, now. I have him on a schedule to eat, with water available till an hour and a half before bed. I have even taken to keeping him on a leash next to me and I take him out each time he wakes from naps and after eating (after eating isn't the problem). As soon as he wakes he usually pees, and so I've been picking him up and taking him out and giving the gentle command, "Go pee pee" *lol*, he isn't now. Now he just wanders around and around and sits there and stares at me (as if, what do you want me to do mom? *S*)....As soon as I bring him in (around 10-15 minutes after being out) he relieves himself on the carpet. Sometimes, he'll pee outside and then when we get inside, after 5-10 minutes, he'll pee again!

Any ideas on how to stop/slow this?

Thanks all...

NOTE: Oh my..I just found the answer to a few similar cases..*g* thanks all for bearing with me!

I just learned this the other day!

Look up Bell Training. Here is what you do. Go to like Hobby Lobby or something, pick up a bell and hang it from the door knob at nose height of the puppy. Then, when you take him/her out to go potty, ring the bell, then open the door. We did that like two or three times, then out of curiosity, he rang the bell, and we opened the door. Now, Sketch knows that if he wants to go outside, he rings the bell. It takes some people a little longer, I am sure, but Sketch picked it up right away. Boxers are brilliant! At first, he may keep ringing the bell, but make sure you take him out when he does it so he knows that ringing the bell means, "HEY!! I GOTTA GO OUT!!!!"

Thanks!

That sounds like a great idea! He usually picks up on things really quick, I hope he can figure this one out! Thanks for the help!

Bell Training Troubles...

Hi. We tried Bell Training with Shiva and had to take the bells completely down due to an interesting and unexpected Pavlovian response. Whenever Shiva hears bells (even keys jingling on t.v.) he starts to pee on the spot. Oops! So, Shiva is almost 16 weeks old now and still has trouble communicating to us when he needs to go outside. I take him out at regular intervals and if he needs to go at an off-schedule time we usually have an accident.

Any suggestions besides Bell Training?

When patton wants go out to use the bathroom he sits in front of the door and whines. When he wants to go play he jumps on the door. I dont know how or why he decided to do it this way ( I didnt train him to do it )

When I was a kid my dad taught our Husky to ring the bell so that's what I've done with my 2 & it's worked great. The only downside is Zoe rings it constantly because she LOVES to go outside LOL
I would do a search on potty training or house breaking and you're sure to find some other ideas.

Sam is 7 months and still won't always let me know when he needs to go out.
I just make sure he goes out quite often, which is pretty easy because I'm out working in the yard a lot and of course he has to follow my every move. He also knows what 'outside' means, so when he is in the house and I tell him 'outside!', he goes to the door.
We tried the bell training with absolutely no luck. But hey, it might work for Jack! Until you find something that works, just make sure to let him out about 30 minutes or so (if possible).
Believe me, I know it gets frustrating! I had a thread similar to this a couple months ago- I think it was He won't tell me when he needs to go. You might want to check it out and see if there is anything useful there.
Good Luck!

Bells work great! You can try using the search button, you will find a lot of info there on bells. Just like RentOsketch said. If you have any other questions on the bells just pm me.

When training our puppy (who is now 16 weeks and doing great with potty training), we took him out preventatively--like before and after naps, eating, playing, etc. and when we did, we usually picked him up and went, but first set him at the door and said time to go outside? He must have just picked up on the routine because now whenever he has to go, he just sits at the door and waits for someone to notice him. it's been almost a month since an accident:)

Good luck, it'll click eventually
