How did you fall in love with boxers?

My grandparents always had boxers while I was growing up and they became my best friend and I knew when I was old enough I would have one. My wife took a little convincing but once she saw Jax we both knew he was our forever.

As a kid, I ALWAYS wanted a dog. We have a lab for a very short period of time, but never really had a dog.

My husband liked the looks of boxers. I just wanted a big dog.
When we bought our first house, we were ready for a dog. Our daughter was just a baby.

We went to a dog show and heard that boxers are great with kids. That's all we needed to hear.
We were off to find our first boxer. I wanted a fawn. We found Remy (our white boy) in a small litter of fawn and brindle. He was the most ornery of the bunch and my husband fell in love with him. :)
Bailey is our third boxer, and I don't think I'd own another breed (although my husband says he doesn't think he wants another boxer  ).

We always thought we would get a lab, and they are great dogs. But my wife was afraid here allergies would be too bad. I said maybe a boxer, since they have finer hair. They really aren't any better from a standpoint of allergies, our research indicated, but we really liked everything else we read. The more we looked into it, the more we wanted one. A guy down the street has a female, and we really liked her. Now, we couldn't be happier.

This is such an interesting topic! My dad always had boxers, so when he and my mom married (1956) they got a boxer! I was born a year later and we had Major until 1969. My first real experience with death...I got a boxer/dalmation mix in 1970 and we lost him to cancer in the summer of 1985. Shiloh picked us in Dec., 1985. Sadly I lost my boy in October 1998. Now we have Indy and Beauty. I've never really considered another breed - I did think about a Boston Terrier after Shiloh died (for the size), but once I saw Indy...

What great stories! It is really interesting to hear the different versions of how boxers stole everyone's hearts! :)

Maybe someday I'll have a similar story to tell. . . . In the meantime, I'll enjoy reading all of yours!

(The reason I have an INTEREST in Boxers is because I have been doing a lot of reading on dog breeds. I think it was this board that really got me hooked -- I don't have a boxer *yet* but I still read the board everyday!)

Two years ago we had to put down our male mutt. We still have a female cocker spaniel (spayed, 11 yrs). So, I started reading up about different breeds. I liked the boxer initially because of their short coat and looks (the cocker sheds long hair). I also thought of the boxer as a "steady" breed in that they check out a situation first and them decide how to react (or at least that's what the books said). So, for two years I waited until we got our house. Then I met a breeder at the dog show and it was history from there! I fell in love through the research and went to the dog show 99.9% sure and became 100% convinced. :) Now I wouldn't trade Emma or have another breed for the world.

I have always loved how boxers look. We seen an ad in the paper from an Amish breeder. We drove around in the snow for about 1-1.5 hours and then finally found the farm :D When we walked through the huge barn and I layed eyes on Buster (Elliott's steamin' lugnuts) I fell in love. I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world:P We only wish we would have taken his brother to :(

The little Beagle mix we raised with our kids died soon after the last one left home. We were empty nesters and not actively looking for a new dog.
One day, just befor closing, a lady came in where I worked with a tiny black toy poodle, I was oohing and awing and snuggling and she was telling me that the puppy was available.

My husband came in to pick me up and saw what was going on. On the way home he told me about a litter of Boxers he knew about. We had recently moved to the country and instead of feeling free, I was nervous about walking on the roads instead of the city sidewalks I was used to. He said "I've heard they are really good dogs, scarey looking - you could go anywhere and no one would bother you." I did not like the whole idea, went to the library to research the breed. The librarian helped me, and I told her "I'm looking for a reason *NOT* to get one.
And she agreed with me! LOL.

A few days later, I let him take me over to see the litter, and he *sucked* me in.

We bonded so closely during her puppyhood, she liked to be rocked and would try to lay on top of my feet in the morning while I was at the sink, until I would sit with her, in my robe and rock her.

She is at the Rainbow Bridge now, waiting for me to come and rock her again. We have a male now, a big goofy guy - very laid back and sweet. They are just the best breed there is.

The title of your post "fallin love" is a good one, that is what happened.

Hi! My name is Annie & this is my first time here. I've been blessed with 2 boxers in my
life so far. Marty (1950-1962) & Samantha
(almost 9 yrs.) In 1950, my grandfather went
to see his insurance agent. While he was in
the waiting room, a man came in with a boxer
puppy. He started yelling at him & hit him.
My grandfather (a wonderful man & dog lover)
went over to the man, stared him down, &
quietly offered him $25 for the dog!! The man
said ok & my grandfather gave me Marty. I was
5 yrs. old & I'll never forget that day. We
grew up together & he was my best friend. As
for Sam--when I was married, my ex-husband
wouldn't let us have a dog. So when my youngest daughter & I played with her doll
house, we had this little ceramic boxer with
this little dog bowl, & I wrote "Sam" on the
bowl. When this precious daughter was going
to leave for college, she worried about me
being alone for the first time in my life.
So she & her brother & sister bought me
Samantha for Christmas--they said "Mom, here
is your 'Sam' you've waited for so long!!"
It's so wonderful to have another boxer best
friend. There is something about a boxer's
heart or soul that touches me like nothing
else in this world! Sorry this posting is so
long, but I really wanted to share these 2
stories. And I'm so glad to be here.
