I am contemplating buying a chest freezer and I am curious as to how much room i really need. I only have two boxers so any help would be great. How much food do i need to keep on hand at any one time?

I have a 9 cu/ft chest freezer (small). With it full to the top, I can feed my three for 100+ days.

I know many people prefer the upright freezers as it's easier to organize and rotate stock.

An upright freezer is definitely nice, but it doesn't hold as much as a deep freeze of the same cubic footage. What size really all depends on your budget and how much room you have to store it. I wouldn't get anything smaller than 7 cu foot. A lot of people make do with that size, but a 12 cu.ft. would probably be better. It also depends on how much people food you keep in there. I actually have four freezers and they are all almost full, but about half is for people food. :)

We have only 1 small freezer and one extra fridge with a freezer on top. Both of these are full of food for the dogs. Our fridge in the kitchen consists of mainly food for us but it is slowly being taken over by the pups food! I usually have to go get more food every 2 - 3 months.

I would love a bigger freezer! At least then we could probably store some food of our own! Problem is I don't have the space:( Oooh I have to agree with Jan. The uprights don't hold as much. But it is easier to organize.

I have a chest and an upright for my dogs. In the chest I keep the chicken and chew bones. It has dividers in it, so when a section gets empty I start on another going in clock wise direction. The upright I keep all the beef, tripe, lamb, rabbit, and goat, because it is easier to rotate stock. With both my freezers full I can feed my two for about 6 months. I have a seasonally job that last that long. Since I have to work long hours also, I don't have time to deal with buying and bagging the meat. Everything is bought beforehand, so I just have to defrost and feed.

My dogs have 2 freezers - both chest. One is smaller the other is larger and I have one for human food and it is huge. I am always stocking up on sale stuff and we get deer/moose from others so I like to have the extra room and not have to say no to free food :)
