I was driving home from work day before yesterday and it was raining really bad. As I passed the intersection to the road to the dog park I saw a homeless man holding a sign. He had a very depressed looking dog on the end of a leash sitting next to him. I slowed down to read the sign and as I did I noticed the dog was a boxer! He/she was all fawn w/ no white and either poorly bred or a mix but a boxer just the same. Unfortunately I had my dog-in-law and my new minpin in the car with me other wise I probably would have told the guy I'd take his dog if he wanted. ;) So I was telling my friend this story and she said she always keeps a bag of food in her car for just such a situation. Just thought I'd share in case anyone else in mn sees this boxer and it's dad, maybe you can have some food in your car waiting for him/her. :)

That is a great idea. I am going to put one in my car tonight.

It is a sad situation. I feel bad when I see homeless people with animals. I can see why they don't want to give them up becuase it may be their only friend but sometimes they need to do what is best for the animal.

Another good idea. I had a homeless person sour me on giving money. His sob story made me give the guy $20.00. 5 mins later I saw him come walking out of the liquor store with a bottle of booze. I said "I thought you were starving" and the guy told me to F*CK off. I know not everyone is like that but I can't bring myself to give money anymore.

My daughter buys the kids' meals at McD's and gives them to the homeless. I've also been burned by the guy wanting food money and going into the liquor store right after. You have to consider that YOUR heart was in the right place and his abuse doesn't diminish your good will. But I also have given grocery store gift certificates when I am panhandled. I suppose they could use these too for booze, but I try to pick my opportunities carefully. An able-bodied guy, probably not. A woman with children, I might be more susceptible.

I agree, I prefer to give food and give money to the shelters.
I use to walk a few blocks every morning to get my coffee. This homeless man was always at a certain corner asking for money for "breakfast and coffee" but by the smell of him I know that's not what it was for. So one morning I just brought him back a coffee and a muffin. I wasn't expecting that but he was really happy and thanked me. Mind you he was always very polite when you said "no sorry, don't have any change" he would thank you any ways.

I love the idea of keeping dog food in your car. I see a few homeless people with dogs. I am sure at least the dog will be grateful!

I have a friend who, went she goes to a restaurant downtown will take the "not touched" left overs i.e chicken wings, pizza and will find a homeless person to give it to.

I've done both before, money and food. I once saw a man in a whelechair with very obvioulsy atrophied legs, so I know he wasn't faking and he had his two children with him because they didn't appear to have anywhere else to go. They ahd a sign saying they had no food so i gave them 50 dollars. What they did with it I don't know but that's not my business. I have also seen people with signs saying they were hungry and have brought them food and drink. They always seem very grateful. I do not, however, pick up hitchikers. I alwasy feel bad when I see them but there's no way I'm doing that. That would just be foolish.
All anyone can do is do their part to help. Help others when you are able and it will return to you ten fold.

I like that idea of keeping the dog food in the car...here in St. Augustine, we have a large historical/tourist area of downtown and there are quite a few homeless that panhandle around because of all the foot traffic. I have seen a few with dogs and I would love to help them.
On the subject of helping homeless..I have an uncle that is a general manager of a large auto-mall type car dealership in Alaska and when he sees people on the road with signs saying "will work for..." he pulls right over and tells them to get in...he tells them they can come wash cars and he will pay well. If they won't get in the car right then, he'll give them a card and tell them to come down to the dealership and he'll put them to work right away. (I am in the car business too, so I understand how hard it is to keep this job filled). It is funny, though, not many take him up on it. He actually had a guy once tell him "H#ll no, it is much easier to stand here and have people just give me money"... I was shocked!

here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, they have made it against the law to panhandle on the corner, of course that hasn't stoped them. There was a really scragly looking lady standing in front of the Chineese place we order from a lot and she asked if I had anything cause she hadn't eaten all day. I gave her a dollar and didn't get 10 feet from her and she was pulling a pack of cigiretts out of her pocket. I felt like going and snatching my dollar back and telling her if she was so hungry, then chomp on those cigiretts. I gave another guy a package of those little cinnamon pecan twirls and he was very appreciative. guess it's just hit and miss

The thing that stinks is that the new ban applies to everyone....now the firemen cannot do the annual Fill the Boot where they stand on the corner with their firemen boots to help raise money for either multiple-sclerosis or muscular distrophy (please excuse the spelling of the above) I can't remember which. I think the should have made an acception.

I always give the homeless people water and sandwich's. In Philly I did have someone throw the sandwich back at me and curse me out for not giving them money for beer. LOL! Dog food in the car sounds like a great idea. I will do it too.

Also try and remember, it's all about doing a good deed. It doesn't have to be a huge financial sum or tons of food or whatever. It's about reaching out and helping someone (and possibly their pet). Yes, one may get burned from time to time (liquor store purchase), but at least you know your heart was in the right place. And the person on the receiving end, well one day they'll have to atone for their actions - good and bad!
