When I was in Poland there was one homeless person after another on the streets... I usually made sure to give something to the street preformers because they were doing something instead of just sitting there... I was quite crushed when I saw so many children in wheel chairs, legs cut off, with there mothers standing beside them.. sadly my uncle told me that a lot of these people who were mainly gypsies would intensionly hurt there children and then stand on street corners and get money because of sympathetic people.. its such a sad thing really and I just couldnt believe that someone would hurt there own child for money.. it sickened me and I just cant give money to thoes kinds of people anymore...however the making lunches for the homeless is a good idea.

I carry a ziploc bad of dog food & a throw away plastic bowl, I've found you also have to give them a couple of dollars so they won't get mad at you for just giving to their dog.

There is a homeless man and his dog here in Toronto, I pass him on my way to Union Station. Well Yesterday on my way to catch my train, at the station there were Purina reps handing out dog & cat food samples. Well I took the bag of Dog kibble said thanks, so this morning on my way to the office the man and his dog were in their usual spot, so I gave the guy the sample bag (probably about 4-5 cups worth) he was very grateful and said thank-you. His pooch is a mutt, but looks to be in pretty good health and is very friendly.
Tomorrow I am going to go to my local pet store and buy a small bag of food, which Iwill give him on monday and I will probably continue to get food for the dog.

Homeless dogs

I had a couple of bad experiences with homeless people that had dogs, so I tend to get a little defensive about it now. BUT, I always carry a doggie kit in my car. It includes, an extra leash, milk bones, dog food and sneakers for me in case I have to run and chase. Everytime I have an experience with either feeding a homeless dog, or trying to catch a homeless dog that's in danger, a new item gets added to the kit. I swear my car is a rolling kennel....

When I was 18 I moved to Hollywood with some friends. That can be a nasty town after dark, esp. for young girls. I was always making friends with the homeless people in my neighborhood. My roomies hated it. I would buy them food and (non alcoholic) drinks. (my roomies never knew this but...) I'd let a few of them shower at my place once in a while when it was over 110 degrees out. Well it all paid off for us on many occassions! If we were getting hassled by creeps "our homeless guys" would pop out of nowhere and act crazy and scare off the offenders!
One of them had a dog and when temps were high he'd always ask if I could take his "daughter" in the A/C for a few days. I always did of course! He refused to come along. I felt honored that he trusted me with his baby. She got pampered by us that's for sure!
I moved back East many years ago, but I will never forget "my" homeless pals and the babygirl.

OH WOW TINK u sure got some guts there! I'm turning 18 in Aug. and there's no way I'd even think about walking the streets in our safe neighbourhood at dark where'as at my age u moved out and were letting homeless people into your home.. may god bless you for that.. I'm a huge chicken lol.. its of course really nice that they paid u back by keeping away creepers.

SweetGirlie, you're not a chicken... you are very smart! I would never suggest to anyone to allow any stranger into their home. I did because I know myself. Without getting off on a diff. topic, I have an ability to read people for what they are (or can be) I knew within reason that I was safe. Never did I allow just anyone into my home and I never let my guard down. That's asking for trouble.
But I am more than willing to help any animal and certain people who need a hand. :D
