Jan, I just called the company that makes Missing Link and they told me that the Omega 3 (1000 mg. per 3 teaspoons) is definitely the flax seed. They derive their flax seed from a vegetarian source, but he said you could get flax seed from different sources. So, I guess Duke is getting enough of flax? Paula

Ok, and how many teaspoons are you giving Duke per day? Just trying to figure out how much he's getting into his system right now. We were giving Nikki 2000mg per day and it really helped her. Some give their dogs 3 Tablespoons per day mixed w/cottage cheese (I've read some who have given this to their dogs w/cancer and it has helped their dog become cancer-free).

Hi Jan! Okay, Duke is getting one tablespoon which is 3 teaspoons which is 1000 mg. a day so maybe I should up his dosage to 2 tablespoons a day instead of one, huh? It says on the package that it may benefit to double the amount for the first 90 days, so maybe that is what I need to do. Paula

I would definitely increase the Missing Link. Just out of curiousity, did this skin condition start before or after you started giving him Missing Link? Did you happen to change his diet around the time it started?

You might want to consider giving him California Natural Lamb & Rice. It's really good for dogs w/allergies. It has the least amount of ingredients on the market. What are you feeding Duke? Give him kisses from us, k? Poor little munchkin!

The rash started in July while on the Missing Link. He eats raw, so I am really getting nervous that he is allergic to one or more of his meat sources. I haven't done anything differently, except I did go out of town back in July for almost a week, plus it was hotter than blazes here then and that is when everything started with Duke. I have tried California Natural lamb and rice before (not too long ago)--Duke wolfed it down the first time like he couldn't get enough of it and then he wouldn't eat it anymore. I think it is a really great food too. I guess he has been on raw for too long. I will up his Missing Link and pray that helps him! Thank you for all of your help! Paula

flax oil

I've been reading about Dukes problems. I have been doing strictly holistic care on my furkids for 8 years now and I doubt if he has a food allergy. But something many people are not aware of is Flax oil can cause allergy problems. My holistic vet who we consult with for our store and products we carry *told* me not to have products in our store with flax oil in them.she has been studying the affects of flax oil for a few years and her conclusion is dogs and cats should not have flax oil in thier diets.Better oils are primrose oil and borage oil , also try a good wild salmon oil alternating with a cold water fish oil ( Urban Wolf) has a excellent cold water fish oil( combination of mackeral, anchovie, and sardine oils in it) also cod liver oil only once aweek. Chicken is a hot meat and beef is nuetral while duck is cold. Raw egg yolk, not white part is also helpful to the skin and hair because of the biotin.If he has been vaccinated ...I think his problem is probably vaccine induced and also genetic which is a man made problem for all pure breeds.

I suggest a good Classical homeopath *vet* to help with the vaccine effects to start. becarefull because alot of vet use the word holistic and use a wide range of healing modalities, try to find one who just does homeopathy and diet.

Susan, I have sort of wondered myself about the flax and from things I have read up on. Yes, Duke had all of his puppy shots, plus everything again at 1 year. Our conventional vet gave him those--we no longer see her. He is just a little over 2 now. As far as holistic vets in this area goes, we are presently going to one now over in Simpsonville, KY who does have diet and a few other things I believe listed. I think there is only one more in the Louisville area that does holistic. I will check out these other oils. There is an Apache Indian woman here in New Albany that does and carries A LOT of holistic stuff (that is where I got the "essential oils" from) so she may have some of these other oils that you mention. I will definitely look around for alternatives. Thanks, Paula

You may want to do phone consults with a classical homeopath vet and if your other vet really cares about making Duke better she will work with the homeopath...such as running requested test, bloodwork and such. Most holistic vets will work with each other especially if one has a certain specialty area the work in. Not many vets are strictly classical homeopaths. If you PM me I will give you a list of homeopath I have worked with or know are the best in this modality.
