Hives Help!!!

Over the summer Jake got the hives so bad that his eyes were practically closed all the way.
After a dose of Benedryl, we headed for the Vets. The Vet noticed a very inflammed spot in his ear. The vet said it was probably a spider bite that caused the swelling.
We kept Jake on Benedryl for a week, and noticed an improvement in the swelling after 3 or 4 days. It was a very scary experience.

Anyway, good luck with you dog. I hope he gets back to his old self soon.

Our Mojo gets hives after being stung by a bee...this happend at least once a month last summer thanks to her gotta get everything that moves attitude! We give Childrens Benadryl as well...trips to the vet for shots got very old and our breeder told us to try it....Worked great!

Hives

I have a reverse brindle boxer that has had a lot of skin problems. She was the rut of a litter of 12 puppies. Took her to the vet and was told she had mange. She ended up having both kinds so the vet said and we have been fighting skin problems for 5 months. Have done the dips, shots now I am bathing her in a solution of summers eve and benodine (sp) that a friend told me to try. It is helping to heal the sores and I think she is getting better. I also brought a shampoo called Allergroom for a dog with allergies. I also started her on a new food that seems to be helping. It is called Solid Gold and it is all natural.

I just want to thank everyone for their responses, the hives seem to be getting better, well I hope they are going down this morning he was a little more itchy then usual but I will be going home at lunch to see how he is doing, I am going to try to take him off the benedryl Saturday.

My white female has had several bouts with hives (origin unknown). For her, benadryl only masks the symptoms and as soon as it wears off, the hives are back. She has a prescription from the vet called hydroxizine (sp?) which seems to be stronger then the benadryl. She has also had them so bad that she has been on prednisone before. They have also given her a shots, but I don't remember if it was cortizone or prednisone (or maybe those are the same - it has been awhile she she had had an outbreak). Also, as the vet explained she could have several small allergies that individually don't bother her such as food, grass, bug bites, etc., but when they all occure at once, it puts them over the edge. It was always recommended to me to give them a bath in an oatmeal based shampoo after an outbreak.

Good luck. Hives are not fun for the fur babies.

First off how old are your dogs. our Zowie had hive breakouts constantly for half of the summer. I thought for sure it was mange because it wouldn't go away. I put her on Natural balance duck & potato. Got meds several times (cephelexin and a sterroid of some sort) did not nor could I afford those for god knows how long. I wanted to get an allergy test done but I was told by 2 vets that untill she is 2 - 3 years old it could be a waste of money because not only can dogs such as boxers grow out of allergies they can develop new ones. It can also be seasonal which in no way would effect the test but none the less. I think the problem lied within the immune system. They have an allergic reaction and adversley trigger a bacterial / viral infection thus weakening the immune system further making them susseptible (sp) to more bad things. I have been giving her "missing link" supplement for about 2 weeks and I want to say I have noticed a pretty big difference. She still itches a bit but I don't think any more than a normal dog. the only thing that discourages me about this is the fact that winter is here and obviously alot of allergens are dormit this time of year. I swab her ears with alchahol every time i give her a bath which is once every 1 or 2 weeks. by the way she HAD to have been bit by something about a week ago because to make a long story short it looked like she had a tennis ball inside her lip when i came home from work and rushed her up to the vet. They gave her the typical benadryl / sterroid shot. Sometimes masking the problem is what needs to be done in a case like that where it could have killed her. Didn't notice any spots on her at the time. 2 days later there was 2 huge spots on her about the size of a dime 1/4 inch tall in the middle of her back where she can't reach and on her leg. I can only assume that those were the bites that caused that horrible reaction. Does this sound correct to anyone who has experienced such a thing? Good luck with the itching and I hope my fight is downhill now too :o)

Well that is horrible that is what the vet said to me that they think something must have bitten him. I tried last night to stop giving him the benedryl and then this morning he woke up with some hives not a lot but about 10 so I had to give him another dose. I really do not know what it could be, we think it may be the remote control car that has gas but is in our spare room maybe the pine tree outside? We have no clue but I do not think I will be able to leave him on benedryl for the rest of his life how do you handle something like this? What do you do? I feel horrible just when you think it is getting better they come back.

yuk!! Hives

Sounds like what happened to my Star. Yesterday in the early morning I got home from work at 3:00am. I opened the door to my spare bedroom where I keep her and Gonzo. I started trying to ween her off the crate so she was free roaming in the room and little Gonzo (who just turned 4months) was in the crate. Star was covered in hives. I did not see her face at first cause it was dark. I got them outside and noticed her face. It looked like she got in a boxing match and lost. Her right eye was completely shut and her left was almost shut. Her whole face and muzzle was sooo swollen!!! I rushed her to the emergemcy clinic and they gave her a benadryl and texauethasone?(trying to read vet's handwriting) shot. I hardly sleeped all night. Off course hubby was out of town too! I keep getting up to check on her swollen face. At 12:00pm I got up and she was still swollen but not so much as before. The vet said if she was to give her two benadryl pills. I started checking her for any bites or other marks that might give me some clue to her allergic reaction. The only other thing I found was on her back feet inbetween her toes were a little red and irritated. The only thing that I could think of that she could have gotten in was that I just bought lysal plug inserts. They are air deoderisor with the oil inserts. Maybe she licked it? Or a spider bite? I then took her to our regular vet. She got another benadryl shot and 5mg of prednisone. Sorry that this is so long! I hope this helps! Have you used any new cleaning products? or a product that you use might have changed thier scent? I hope i have helped some! So far Star is back to normal but she is still on her pills. She is 13 months and this is the first problem she has had. Good luck and let us know how he is doing!! Kara
