My dog broke out in hives and his head was swollen in the morning I took him to the vet they gave him a shot of benedryl by the time I got home they were back again, I took him back down to the vet and they gave him a shot to close his immune system. The next 2 days he was fine and then again yesterday morning hives again I have been giving him the benedryl but he still has the hives. I can not eat, sleep it is horrible I am terrified!!! Someone please help.

Did you switch his food or give him anything new that he might be allergic to? Did the vet give you any idea what was causing it? It sounds like he is getting into something over and over to keep them coming back, or he ingested something.

No nothing I have not changed anything I bought new food today to try to switch I am so nervous nothing. The vet did not say anything just that it might be some sort of allergy.

Have you used any shampoos or have you recently washed any bed sheets or dog bed ect? One of my dogs has had hives from both a dog shampoo and a laundry detergent I used.
Allergies can also occure from long term exposer to something, so even if there is nothing new to the dogs environment they can develop an allergic reaction to a detergent or food or plastic food bowls ect. over time.

My dog also had hives and while the vet said that we could not prove what caused it I think it was the shampoo I had washed him with the day before. I was not about to wash with it agian to see how he would react! The vet gave him benedryl and a steroid shot.

I have not given him a bath in about a month so it can not be the shampoo I have no idea the vet was not very helpful but I guess they really do not know.

Could your dog have gotten into something outside? Another possibility my vet had said was bee sting allergy? They said it is very hard to pinpoint the source of allergies in dogs.

hives

my meadow gets hives on occasion..she had them really bad last year after eating cashews...the vet put her on special dog food and i gave her benedryl for children..one kids for every 25 lbs.. shes had hives before the benedryl always helps..i keep it on hand..could your dog have eaten something out of the ordinary..do you have any other pets that have changed food or shampoos..every boxer i know has had hives from something or another its so scarey when it happens..i hope you both are ok..

Danielle--have you considered feeding boiled chicken or plain, cooked ground beef with rice, rather than starting a new kibble? Kibbles have so many ingredients. It might be better to feed something bland until the hives resolve, then start back on kibble.
