Hip Displasia, Now What?

Well my fears have come true, Subi has Hip Displaysia.
This poor dog has had a rough life as it is and now she has Hip Displaysia, she is only 10 months and 37 pounds.
Anyways i am taking her to a few vets to get some opinions on the best scenerio for her. My regular vet suggested for her to be on medication for the rest of her life, he felt that because she was so small that she would have a pretty normal life on the medication without going through surgery. So for the next 2 weeks Subi will be on Rimadyl and also Cocendin (sp). After 2 weeks I will take Subi back to the vet and see if we can take her off the Rimadyl but she will stay on the cocendin for another 3-4 months, if she does seems to be okay (no limping or favoring her left leg) after the 3-4 month period then we will continue on the cocedin for the rest of her life. He feels that we might be able to skip the surgery as long as she doesnt run and jump and gets daily walks 20 minutes and some swimming and we put her on Adult Dog Food because she is SOOO little.

However- Subi willl be limited at the dog park on what she can do- no running or jumping on other dogs or letting dogs jump on her :(

I am going to talk with 2 other vets- one my rescue recommend and another that i think specializes in Hip Displaysia to find out what they feel is the best option.

Unfortunantly there is a little bit of arthritis so TPO is out of the question for Subi, the only other option is total hip replacement.
Which is more expensive.

Just some of the symptoms Subi had:
Used to jump off the deck- 3 steps - no longer does that
Used to run like a chicken with her head cut off outside- stopped doing that also
When she laid down she would limp when she got up for like a minute
2 weeks later she would hold her leg for a little while and would favor the leg
if Bailey steps on her wrong she will yelp or snap at Bailey- not like her.
She had problems jumping on the bed at night

If your boxer shows any signs i would get them in as soon as possible, the sooner they catch the problem the easier it is too fix.
Unfortunantly I didnt take Subi in immediately, I waited because I thought maybe Bailey hit her wrong and she had a little injury, within that few week period, and taking her to the dog park and letting her run, Arthritis set in- not a lot but enough to make the less costly operation not an option.

Sorry so long

I strongly recommend you don't use the Rimadyl. My parents just had to put their Collie to sleep a few weeks back. She was having trouble walking along with other symptoms, and keep in mind she was 12 years old, but after being on Rimadyl for 10 days her lab work showed elevated liver enzymes. She rapidly declined from there. Much of the reading we did on the internet after the fact strongly states that Rimadyl is a dangerous drug.

Being so young, I would opt for a total hip replacement. Friends of ours had this done and their dog had a new leash on life. I wouldn't recommend it for an older dog but definantly for a younger one with many years ahead of it.

Do you have a health guarantee from her breeder? This is definantly a congenital defect and should be brought to the attention of the breeder immediately.

I am so sorry for poor Subi, please keep us posted.

Hi Aimee,

Thanks for the tip on Rimydl. I will talk with the other vets about that as well and also the rescue.

I know what you mean about the Total Hip Surgery but we are looking at $6500.00 because it would be both hips. We do not have the money YET to do that, we just bought a house in August and are trying to start saving again.
What i would like to do is keep her on the pills cocedin (sp) for about a year or less and that would give us time to save the money, plus i think i am going to start doing some fund raising at the dog park- have to get that approved.

As soon as the money is saved up then we would do the surgery. There is no other surgery we can do, only the Total Hip Replacement.

I got Subi from the rescue, she was found on the side of the road at 4 weeks - her story is in the adoption stories, i dont know who the breeder is but probably a back yard breeder- what i wouldnt give to get ahold of those people. I would give them a shift kick in the hip ( and a few other places) The only good thing is is that i have one of the best dogs :)

And i agree. POOR SUBI to be going through this at a young age. believe me i found out yesterday and i couldnt write to you guys about this till today, I WAS REALLY UPSET AND SAD.

I have no experience with HD, but I wanted to send my thoughts you are able to help your poor girl. I think it is fabulous you took her in when some heartless fool dumped her :(

Be strong and give her a hug from me lovicon

I have a question. About two weeks ago, we took Max to the dog park and we let him run and play for almost two hours. Later that day, we noticed he would lift his back left leg when he would stand. I thought it was just a pulled muscle or just a tired leg or even a cramp. We agreed that if he was still doing that the next day, we would take him to the doctor. He never did it again. I did check on this board for causes and I ran into a lot of posts on HD and torn ACL and similar inital symptoms. It's been two weeks now and Max doesn't have problems running, jumping, and pulling, but on the back of my mind, I keep worrying if he is developing HD. Is it possible for dogs to just have pulled a muscle or cramps for over exercising? Do you think I should take him in and check the X-rays? Ever since we lost Lexi, I have a fear of bad news from doctors.

Sube Ru's mom, I apologize for using your post to ask a question. I wish you and Sube Ru the best outcome for this situation.

Subi Update

Well i just wanted to send an update on Subi and to say THANK YOU to everyone that is wishing her well.

I went and got the second opinion for Subi, this time i took her to my rescue's vet, he doesnt mince words thats for sure, he said the same thing my vet did but he was very blunt,

Subi has SEVERE Hip DIsplaysia, it is the WORST he has ever seen in his experience of being a vet.
He is willing to try the cosequin but does not seem to optomistic that it will work because it is soo bad.
the good thing is is that Subi is a "mini" boxer, this might buy us some time- 1 year, until we need to do the Total Hip Replacement in her hips.
He gave me the name of a Hip Specialist here in MD, they are actually in Annapolis, 5 minutes from my house.

Here is what we are doing.
Subi goes in on Tuesday to the specialist.
Her Left Hip is the BAD hip, what I am hoping is that with her Right hip we can do a (TPO) Triple Pelvic Ostomogy (sp) this can only be done if there is no sign of arthritis, if so I will have the surgery done ASAP, time is of the essence with a TPO. I will then wait for 6 months and do the Total Hip Replacement on the Left Hip. If however we can not do a TPO on the right hip then I will see what the doctor suggests as far as timing for the surgeries. The nice thing with a TPO is is that is cost about 2000.00 or less, a total hip replacement is 3000.00 so i can save roughly 1000.00 if i can do a TPO.

Even though our parents, yes we are 25 but we are both (pat and I) close with our parents, do not support us in our decision, they do not think we should spend roughly 6000-7000 on a dog. we are going to do the surgery, Subi is 10 months, she has had a rough life as is, I want to do whatever i can to give her a measure of the happiness she gives to me, I would gladly give her my own hip if i could.

I will keep everyone posted as Subi progresses or we find out more information.

Keep in touch we all want the best for her. Sad that so much can go so wrong and how some people do not understand how fast you can become attached to a dog.. they aren't jsut dogs but part of the family.
She is lucky to have you.
