Help!!!Trying to give Gatsby more freedom

We've decided it was time to start expanding Gatsby's boundaries. Usually he stays in his crate inside the laundry room, and since I work from home I take him out for potty and playing before lunch and dinner, and then he stays with us in the family room until bed time. This week I decided to start leaving him in the laundry room with the gate in the doorway. And he HATES it. Cries, whines, tries to jump on top of the gate, has taken out his bed and ripped it apart. If I put him inside the crate in the same room he is fine. I leave him toys, bones, praise and treat if he is not crying, but nothing helps.
I think he is a big boy now (9 months) and I want him to have more freedom than he has in the crate, especially if we want to go out at night.
Does anyone have any ideas?

If I leave him out, I can't get anything done. He brings his toys and wants to play :) And I really do have to work. Besides, giving him a structured day has worked well for us when we can't be home, as he does not even know the difference, as long as we are back at his "scheduled" times. Usually, if we have to be gone all day, I take him to daycare, but we have a situation coming up where we have to be gone for around 6 hours in the evening and he can't come with us. I really do not want to leave him in his crate for that long!!! The most he has ever been inside is 4 hours.

Fresh pup :) I have a five year old that still goes in his crate when I am out so I am no help to you but would say he is still a bit young. Have you left him in there and gone outside for a few minutes to see if he settles down? Kinda spy on him
