Help Me Please!!!

We have a 7 1/2 year old min pin and a 4 month old boxer. Our dogs are NEVER left all day without a potty break. I personally feel it is not fair / nor healthy to expect a dog to hold it all day - talk about being uncomforable!!

Potty Break

Do you know of any other boxer owners who have left their dogs in the crate all day ( I am talking about 8-9 hours). I personally don't, but I wanted to find out what the rule of thumb was. This is my first dog and many have told me that I am spoiling him by taking him out during lunch. I think it's mean to have to make Baxter wait all day. Any suggestions or experiences/lessons learned would be appreciated!

Our Emma is a year and a half, and the longest I leave her in the crate is 6 hours. I am lucky to work part-time, 5 hours most days. When I do have to work a full day I run home at noon (or my husband does or occasionally a neighbor) and let her out. With our last boxer, I was working full-time and she was never crated, so she had the run of the house for 7-8 hours and did fine (I think she slept 75 percent of the time). It is not so much that I think her bladder is going to burst (our present boxer), I just don't think she should be crated that long and want to give her a break. When she is 2 we will give her the run of the house, and if she does OK we will leave her for a full day. I think when they can look out the windows, play with their toys, interact with the other pets (in our case, a cat), etc., it is not so bad to leave them. I always give them special attention, exercise, when I get home.

I also suggest getting a bell. Also, which ever you chose the KEY is being consistant! My baby boy used to go nuts in his crate, but I just ignored him and praised him when he was quite in there. You never want to punish your boxer and put him/her in the crate afterwards. They will not see their crate as a happy place. I hope it gets better!

Ahh! I know how you feel! Just a couple of weeks ago, I posted a question to ask the same thing. Allie is now 9 months old. She was doing exactly what you described. I just kept with it and took her out whenever she acted like she needed to go, or when 2 hours had passed. And, of course, I kept a very close eye on her. For some reason, everything has clicked into place. She now whines and sits by the door when she needs to go out, and we havent had any accidents in awhile! (knock on wood). Just stick with it! It is so frustrating, but your pup will get it too! Best of luck!
Oh, and, Allie stays in her crate when we arent home. We also tried bell training, but it didnt work for us due our traveling circumstances.

We have a 9mo old and holding it for 2 hours is a good day for her LOL...She drinks a ton of water as she is a never ending bundle of slobbery play. As far as the crate what we did was put her in then give her a treat and, as she is deaf, give her the good dog sign. When she decides to cry we just let her. I figure if we run to her every time she cries she will be training us instead of us her. HTH

Boxer Potty Training

Thank you all for the information. It seems as just like every person is different so to is every boxer. I feel that Baxter (my boxer) will get used to his routine. So far he has never gone in his crate. He always waits, but ohh boy, when it's time to go I have never seen him make his way up 13 steps faster

Sorry about your news maybe this will help. It helped my baby to learn more quickly. Go to walmart and buy bells that hang over your door knob. I helped GAGE ring the bells several times each time I let him out. Quickly he associated ringing the bells with going out. This will help you and her. The crate thing never worked with my boys.
