Help me, my dog won't go to the door to get outside!

I have a boxer named Eleanor, she is 1 ½ yrs old. She is good about going to the bathroom outside except for when I am gone during the day, and when I am not religious about taking her out every hour. I don't understand how a dog can go to the bathroom every time it goes outside, yet think it is ok for her to go inside the house. I just built my house 2 years ago and I already am thinking about replacing the carpet because of my dear Eleanor. To make matters worse, we just bought another one, Napoleon. So now trying to train an 11 week old boxer, with a 1 ½ year old that still isn't 100% trained is quite stressful, anybody have any good tips?

I would highly suggest bell training. Kirra (at 17 weeks ) was fully housetrained once she learned how to ring the bell. LOL she even rings it for my minpin as he refuses to use it most days Do a search on bell training, you will find great tips/training advice. Good luck

You should try crate training them. Dogs naturally do not want to soil their "den". It will force Eleanor to hold it and relive herself all at one time. Be sure to make a routine for bathroom breaks – and they shouldn’t have to be every hour. We have 2 in the morning – one immediately when I get up and one before I leave for work – and 3 or 4 at night – one when I get home, one after dinner, and one before bed. If Eleanor has to go every hour, you should consider taking her to a vet to see if she has a bladder problem.

My dog, Buddy, doesn’t go to the door either. Instead he starts to pace excessively and whimper. We kind of settled on this as his signal, but added a verbal command. All I have to say is “Go pee pee?” and if he does a little dance I know he has got to go. He he - love the boxer dance.

There is a lot of great info on crates and house training in this forum. Maybe check out obedience school for extra advice and tips. I learned the school was more for training me then Buddy. It was a positive experience for us and well worth my time, money, and the new commands Buddy knows.

Bell Training!!!! I couldn't get Brutus to go to the door either, but it only took a couple of days with the bell and he rings it every time he needs to go outside. Sometimes, when he doesn't NEED to. Of course you learn in time when they really need to go out. Brutus usually adds a little whine when he has to potty vs. when he just wants to play.
