I have a neutered 6 month old boxer and I would like to get a second for a play mate. I'd like to get one close to his age but does anyone know if a male or a female boxer would be best? When I go to the dog park I always see boxers and if they have 2 they are always two females, the males are always solo. is there a reason?

If your existing pup is a male, then the best playmate for him would probably be a female.

As a general rule (of course, there are exceptions) opposite sexes are the combination most likely to get along. Two males is the next best, and two females is last.

I would, however, suggest that it is better to wait until your puppy is at least a year old, or better, 18 months before adding a second dog. He'll soon be entering his adolescent phase - and would really benefit from your undivided attention during those months. If you wait till he's through it before adding a second puppy, then he'll be able to help you train the baby. If you get a second pup now, you'll have two babies on your hands (or worse - two adolescents).

Or, you could think about adopting an older dog (older than 18 months) :)

My two cents :)

When Roxie was a babie, oh my gosh, what a handful. Bless her heart, we waited until she was 2yrs old to get her a little brother. She was so good to him we did almost nothing (almost) Roxie did it all, she was such a good Big sister to him and they were in-seperable. Wev'e lost Dylan to cancer, Roxies not the same, she has a new sister we adopted. Maya was three when we got her, also Roxie very very good to her, and , Roxie is now 12 :) . Good Luck!!!!!

I second the recommendation to wait another 6 months or more. Putting extra energy into this dog will pay off for him AND the next one.

Also, 6-8 months is not too far ahead to start talking to breeders about long-range plans. Start going to shows and you can find out who has puppies or who will be planning a litter in late summer. Then you could have a well breed puppy girl at the end of the year while having a better trained dog that much older waiting at home!

Stand strong, though, and don't give in to temptation. If somebody has a litter now, I assure you that the puppies they have next winter will be every bit as cute as the ones they have now. Maybe even more:)

Glad I found this post. Jake is about four months old and we have been considering getting another puppy. I was wanting to know views on how far apart in age is considered "OK". We were looking at getting the pup in Apr or May. Maybe we will wait. Just hate to get a pup in winter

This is TOTALLY a matter of opinion I think. I have had 2 Boxer boys, both neutered, at once and they were the best of buds. Agewise they were 6 months apart, although they never met til one was a little over a year and the other was 9-10 months. They were the best of play mates, slept next to each other and everything. Once in a while they would get into it over a bone or something, but it was "all talk" as soon as I said knock it off they quit. They were so much fun to watch together and watching them snuggle at nap time was the cutest.
They had a good 4 years together. The Boxer that I have now really relied on his buddy and misses him terribly (he's at the bridge).

We have two boys

Hi I think it depends on the personality of the dogs and the Alpha (which should be you). Rocky is now 9 months and 3 weeks ago we got another wonderful boy (7 months old). We established the fact that we are the pack leaders and they will follow our lead. So far so good.

They love each other and share everything from water and food; they eat from each others bowls, toys and cuddle at night to sleep. It definitely has created much more work for us, so I would suggest that you prepare mentally and physically for a rough few weeks. Two crazy boxers playing all night and day will take its toll. But at end of the day it is wonderful to have two loving babies and Rocky is much happier having a brother to play with!

You might want more space between your two. Think of the other end; you will have two geriatric dogs at the same time. I had two dogs and two cats which we got about the same time, give or take a year or so. Well, fourteen years later, the obvious happened, all went within the period of a year. It was pretty sad around here. Scrapper is almost four, Holly is 8 months. I would at least have 18 mos. or two years in between age span of the dogs.

2nd Boxer

Wow -it's so great to see other people's opinions on the subject! Mako is only a year old and I know I want to get a second Boxer - but as opposed to other people on this site - I actually want to wait until Mako is about 4. I figure if I wait until then, Mako is not too old that a puppy will annoy him, but not too young that they would be a handful. Also Mako still needs lots of attention from me! I also don't want to have two old Boxers at the same time (as was said previously by another member). Any opinions on this?

have a great day!

I love this site. I logged on today specifically looking for answers on when to get my Maggie a baby brother or sister. That was my other question: brother or sister.
Maggie will be 3 in July and has been the princess since her arrival. Will the joy of a playmate out-weigh the loss of attention Maggie may feel? Any feedback in this area?
