I really, really need you guys' help. Our female, 3 month old puppy has begun to wrap her legs around mine and move her little butt up and down. When she does it in front of other people, they think it's hysterical and say she's "humping" and then come the lesbian jokes. But she's a dog and I didn't think a female would do that. Why is she doing such a bizarre thing??? It doesn't help that she prefers capturing my undies to my husband's boxers. I hope you all don't mind such a question, but it's easier to ask online than to have the behavior in front of people I know.:confused:

It's has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with dominance. Your baby is trying to claim you as her property by moving up the alpha ladder. It is very very common. My Molly is a "humping" queen. I have bruises all over my legs but we are FINALLY getting thru it. I have tried about everything you could think of to get her to stop and ignoring her is the way to go.
When she grabs on to me with her death grip I simply turn the other way and ignore her. Now she just gives up and goes away. You should get the book The Dog Listener it will explain everything perfectly.

Winnie does that as well! Tim jokes and says she's 'boxing dirty' (as in the actual sport of boxing). I either turn away or gently grab her legs and put them back on the ground.. i figure that she's wanting some attention so i usually then grab her toy or ball and play with her for a bit with the toy.
Winnie also goes for my undies instead of Tim's.. my theory is that they are smaller, softer fabric and have more elastic than men's undies.... she also goes for my bras if she can.. Tim figures that it's because she loves 'straps' and 'stringy things'... which is true.. she goes after shoe laces, fringes on the carpet, fringe on blankets ..etc ... etc... I got Winnie one of those 'bones' that's made of tightly twisted together string (can't remember what it's called) and that's really helped cut down her panty/bra/shoe-lace grabbing!

puppies hump when they are excited and geared up, usually during play. It has nothing to do with sex or sexual behavior. Both male and female dogs do this. Nothing to be concerned about.

I've always wondered why people get so embarassed or ashamed as though it reflected on them. It is indeed a typical dog behavior, which, as some have pointed out is done by both sexes.
While some dogs do it more than others, most if not all dogs have done it at some point. Like children, if you make a big fuss about it, they may continue for the attention they receive.
Relax, it is more than likely just a "phase" your dog will outgrow. If you find it intolerable, a stern no or stop it, then leaving them by themselves to think about it should put an end to that action pretty quickly.
Unless your dog is "humping" everybody that comes in the door, or is constantly doing it to someone, you shouldn't fret about it.

The string theory probably is accurate because now that you mention it, Lenox will chew anything with a string.
You all made me feel so much better about my puppy's behavior and gave me a laugh to think that the accusations against my poor dog is simply a reflection on human insecurities. People are so crazy compared to dogs sometimes!

It's called a Flossy Bone (unless there are other brands?), our dogs LOVE these! Just watch out if your dog likes to toss them...those big knots tied in the ends HURT!!
Well, that answers something for me. I introduced Sully (8 wk M) to my girlfriends year and a half old Cocker Spaniel last week when I got him. They are starting to get along a little better after a week or so. At first Thea (Cocker) didn't much care for him, she is an only dog and hasn't really been around many other dogs, and is, of course, spoiled rotten. Anyhow, last night she started humping Sully. We saw it and he just looked back at her and looked like he was saying, "What the heck are you doing?"...then just walked out of it. I thought it was pretty weird, but I guess she is just trying to make her point that SHE is the boss...
