Our puppy, Scout, is 9 weeks old. She was doing pretty good about going outside until a few days ago. She hasn't started to let us know when she wants out yet but she was having very few accidents in the house. She goes all night in her crate with no accidents. My husband comes home everyday at lunch and lets her out, no accidents in the crate. When I get home at approx. 4:00 I let her outside. Sometimes I cannot stand out and watch her in the backyard but will leave her out for 30 to 40 minutes, plenty of time to go. When I let her in the house she will get a drink of water and then pee in the house. She isn't in the house 5 minutes before she pees in the house. Hubby is at the point that she will soon be an outside dog; he thinks she should be doing better by now. I want her to be an inside dog. I need help!! I need advice soon!!

Hi there, just wanted to say first off that this is by no means regression - heck she's not even housetrained yet! She is still a baby and it will take some time for her to be fully housetrained. Keep working with her she still doesn't know yet. As for putting her outside without watching her - not a good idea at this point. You have no clue if she is busy investigating or doing her business - its a big world out there and she is clueless to it all so exploring is probably what she is doing and forgets to go potty, hence the peeing in the house. Go with her, as she goes give her command and then treat and praise - you need to reinforce the "good" for her!! Good luck, it will all come together.

You can't expect a nine week old pup to be fully house trained! Even if you have a fenced yard, it's important to take your Scout out to go to the bathroom. If you just shove her out the door, you won't know if she has eliminated, and you're skipping that essential part of training - PRAISE. When you are outside with her, it also helps to use a phrase (ie do your business, do pee, etc) and reward her with a little treat when she successfully follows the command. She'll eventually get the hang of it. Please don't kick her out of the house - boxers are really inside dogs. Good luck - Cathy

Also, you probably cannot understand how much it hurts us here on BW, who love our furbabies, to hear a relative newbie complain about a nine week old puppy that is not housebroken, to the extent that your hubby is considering making her an outside dog. Boxers need lots of socialization and thrive on human companionship. Please try to be more understanding of a young puppy's needs and don't expect the impossible. This should not be sufficient to relegate a baby to an outside existence. If you had a child, and he was still in diapers at two, would you feel the same? Please be patient. This will not be the first time you don't get instant results with your training efforts. Don't blame the puppy, just continue and be consistent. And, honestly, do not expect FULL reliability until close to a year old. And lastly, even the best-trained dog may get sick, throw up or have an accident in the house. If you want perfection, do not have animals or children.

Let's back up a minute

First of all THANK YOU to Poetic Thing and lafsalot for the support, advise and KIND words. I know I should go out with her each time unfortunately that is not always feasible. I will try harder to get someone to go out with her everytime. I noticed this morning she has gotten good at tricking me, making me think she is doing her business so she can get a treat. We also tell her to go potty when we take her out and give praise. My husband is real guilty of just putting her out. I will relay the advise you have given to him. I know she needs to be an inside dog and will fight to keep her that way. I just needed some support. To Tulsa Dan and Scrapper's Mom; give a newbie a chance! I did not intend to "waste" anyone's time, I just needed help and advice. I thought this was the appropriate place to get that without being reprimanded. I do not intend to hurt anyone by posting here and I do have children (more than one as a matter of fact). I do not expect perfection or instant results from the children or the animals. I do appreciate the advise on not expecting full reliability until about a year of age. I have not trained a dog in almost 15 years, kinda like starting over. Maybe I have thin skin and this is not about me, but some responses have kinda hurt my feelings.

Thanks for speaking yup

To Full House, I am glad you spoke up. I thought this was an open forum to discuss our issues as well as give advice. I can read all the books and use all the search engines there are, but hands on experience is more practical and it seems we are all more than willing to share our experiences and give advice. If we aren't, then why did we join this forum?

I am in the same boat as you. Our boxer is now 14 weeks old and hasn't got a clue on going outside instead of in the house. She will eliminate outside and 5 minutes later go inside. She will also do it right in front of us as we are trying to get her to stop. We just keep hoping it will get better as she gets older. I have received positive support from others on here and appreciate it, but we are still struggling. But the reinforcement from others is great when I am at my wits end!

Hang in there!

Mine werent completely housebroken until 7MONTHS and 11MONTHS.

BE PATIENT...this was even with major consistency, they just werent interested.

i have slow learners...LOL

also, be prepared...mine both did really well for awhile, then when they reached about 6-7months, it seemed like they hit adolesence and regressed...from what i gather, its perfectly normal. One thing that did work for me is putting the dog on a leash in the house and making it go everywhere with you. It is not foolproof by any means, but it helps...expect to have major paranoia for at least 6 months, i know im just letting up on mine, and what do you know, TOMORROW IS ROXIE'S 1ST BIRTHDAY! YEA!

Getting Better

Things are getting better. She has done really well in the past few weeks. She goes to the back door now, doesn't scratch but does go to the door. There have been a few accidents, some have even been by the door because no one saw her there. Our back door opens into a sun room. When she gets to the glass door that leads to outside she will scratch, but not on the one in the house. We have talked about getting a bell but have not done it yet. I'm very proud of how she is doing. I know that she may regress at 6 - 7 months (she is 3 month now). Right now she seems to be going through her "terrible two's". Chewing on everything even when she knows she isn't supposed to. I know she knows what she cannot chew on because she will grab it and run under the table so I cannot get to her to take it away. Just like a child. Anyway, just wanted to say things are improving.
