Hi there! After 4 long weeks of waiting we just took home our 8 week boxer!
We have a 4 year old chihuahua male that lives with us, and they were introduced in our backyard, everything was fine. Except the boxer wants to play and our chihuahua is laid back and not as socialized. But for safe reasons we don't let them play. Is that bad or should we just let them? I'm scared my chihuahua will get boxed in the face and get injured. But i do want them to be buddy buddy! Any suggestions ?
I also wanted to ad that my chihuahua likes to taunt her which is not very nice either.

It's only been 6 hours since they met and it seems like i have to watch them both ALL the time! And i just hope that as days go by they will get to know eachother. And my boxer will learn to play so rough.

If you have any suggestions at all that would be awesome and a huge weight off my shoulders.

And I hear that when you walk them together , that would help them aswell.
But Since my boxer is only 8 weeks, i don't think i can walk her until she gets her last set of shots. any other recommendations for that?

Sorry for making this long i just want this all to work out and be the best of friends

I don't want to pay for ceasar milan ( as great as he is!) lol

Thanks for your answers!!

To be honest you have a lot of work ahead of you even if you were to take your male out of the equation!
Boxer puppies are just crazy....I say this with love.
You are going to have to keep the puppy in check around your Chi. Going to be hard to do! Even a puppy with the best intentions can easily injure a full grown Chi.
I'd let them play with supervision. Adult dogs tend to be a little forgiving with pups. Most will let a pup get away with far more than an older dog. He will be much better at correcting certain behaviors that he doesn't like. The problem lies in the pups age. They can be relentless! This is turn can get on another dogs nerves. You have to make sure your male doesn't get overwhelmed with the Boxer's style of play and that he doesn't react badly towards the puppy.
All sorts of things will be going on that you don't necessarily notice. Just the way he holds his body posture will say a lot to the puppy. Hopefully she is paying attention! Most puppies have the attention span of a gnat. My girl has the attention span of a gnat on crack. There is NO WAY on God's green earth that I would have allowed her to play with a Chi at 8 weeks of age! But that's just me.
You know your guy best. You know what he is capable of. If he seems like he is being completely annoyed by the puppy make sure to give him one on one attention and a lot of space from her. I wish I could say that eventually she will calm down and they will be the best of friends .....this may happen someday day but you have many months of constant supervision for them until she calms down a bit and gets used to his presence as a family member and not a play toy!

Thank you so much for your answer. I've been watching them like a hawk the entire day and night. It seems to be better. When they're both out in the backyard , My Chi would correct her every time she would try to box or bounce around. In a perfect dog world , i wish they would play together but i know that won't happen anytime soon...My boyfriend and I decided that after we get her final shots done, we would like to take them both to obedience class at petsmart. I've heard good and bad things, but i know a couple of my co-workers have taken their boxer to a specific trainer that is really good there and have a decent reputation. So hopefully that should help with my 4 year old Chi to be more socialized and help my baby boxer as well!

I found the best way to keep an eye on the new baby as well as to work on basic obedience was to tie her to me. A collar and a lightweight leash or rope was all we needed. I tied the rope around my waist and the other end to her collar.
This also will help to teach the pup that YOU are the person to follow and listen to and will help you stay aware of what is going on in the house and when she is showing signs that she needs to go out to pee. I also did this with my rescue boxer who was 5, and it really helped me keep an eye so that I was reacting and preventing issues before they began.

It's a great solution for the first few days as the dogs get to know each other, especially if the 4 yr old dog isn't well socialized with other dogs. It sounds like you are going to have a bundle of fun and they will be romping and playing in no time!
