Hi all! I'm Georgia and Dozer's mom, and I love your community and am so happy to join it. Georgia is a Christmas baby, so she's coming up on 5 months old. She's a fawn with about 10% flash. Georgia's brother is Dozer, a year old american bull dog/boxer mix.

Georgia came to our family four weeks ago today, in an extraordinary way. I have always wanted a boxer; my grandparents raised and showed them for most of their lives. My grandfather, with whom I was very close, died last April, and we rescued Dozer in June. We were having a really hard time finding a boxer, and he's a beautiful dark brindled mix. We fell in love even though he wasn't what we were looking for.

My husband kept trying to convince me that Dozer deserved a brother or sister; I resisted becaue I couldn't imagine our household being any crazier (we also have two cats who Dozer loves; the problem is the cats aren't so fond of him; more specifically, they're not crazy about being boxed).

So I was dead set against getting a second dog. You know, they say the best way to make God laugh is to tell Him your plans. As I was walking through the neighborhood gathering kids for our church's sports ministry, I saw a beautiful female boxer and a puppy on someone's front porch. I went over to pet them, and the owner offered me the puppy. She had just had a human baby, and she hadn't been able to find a buyer for this last of the litter. My heart melted; it was the day after the one-year anniversary of my grandpa's death. How could I say no? His name was George; we brought her home and named her Georgia. Now I can't imagine it any other way!

Wow, isn't it just amazing how some things just fall into place like that? It is like Georgia is a gift to you from your grandfather. That is awesome!! And the fact that she was born on Christmas is even greater. My Bella was born Dec. 28th, so our girls our really close in age. Bella is also a flashy fawn. Congratulations on your new baby and I can't wait to hear more about her and Dozer. I also hope to see some pictures soon! Welcome to BW!! :)

North Philly

We live in West Kensington in North Philly, in the Latino "barrio." Good food, great music, and lots of neighbor dogs to play with! We have a pit bull behind us, a chow and a pomeranian next door, and a black lab two doors down. And of course Georgia's mother, Chica, only lives two blocks away. We take her down to visit her mom just about every day when we go out for our walk.

If anyone is from around Philly and knows of a good dog run in the North/Northeast, or even Center City, please let me know. Dozer is too wild to let off his leash at a regular park...

Bella

What a beautiful girl! Bella is so much bigger than my Georgia though...I just weighed her, and she's still only about 18 pounds--the same as Meatball, our fat orange tabby cat! Dozer, BTW, tips the scales at nearly 70 pounds; it's a struggle just to pick him up to weigh him!

I was glad though to see the hollows in Bella's chest--I'm starting to see that that's pretty normal. I've been worried about Georgia, because in addition to those hollows, every single one of her ribs stick out. We just can't seem to get any weight on her. The vet de-wormed her just in case, so I know that's not the problem. I guess she's just a small, skinny girl...

I wish I had some pictures to post. I just don't have a scanner; I'll at least be able to do some over Memorial Day when I visit my parents (they live near Erie, PA, a 7-8 hour drive). I'm really excited to take her home to meet everyone--Grandma is desperate to meet baby Georgia! But my dad hassles me every time we talk--he says she's "not a real Boxer" if her ears aren't clipped. But I can't bear to do it, and I think she's adorable just the way she is!

Bella is a BIG girl! She went to the vet last week and she weighed exactly 30 pounds. It is all solid muscle though, I don't think she has an ounce of fat on her. Sometimes I think she looks so skinny, but I know she eats plenty! I just have to get used to the boxer breed. They are a skinny breed. I hope you can get some pictures put on soon. I had to invest in a digital camera recently. It was just too hard to wait to get my pictures back!! Oh, by the way, what are hollows? I don't think I have ever heard of that before now......

Welcome Kristy, Georgia, and Dozer. I loved reading your story. It is very close to my own. Accept I lost my mother and father. My dad was a sheriffs deputy and air force pilot and rescued many dogs while on the job, and several were boxers. We had a houseful growing up. Once my father rescued a family of boxers, who were show dogs. The owner/trainer was drunk and was shooting all of his dogs. My dad successfully arrested the guy and took in one of the dogs (Rita) and gave the other (Annabelle) to his best friend. We had boxers in the family ever since. After losing both parents last year, my husband took me to a local flee market to bum around and we came across a family with 2 males left. He told the lady to put one in my arms. I told him not to screw around because I wasn't about to give him back. After all, we already had 1 dog, 1 fat cat and 2 skin kids. Not to mention, the litter was probably from an unreputible breeder. But once I held him, it was all over. He was Major, after my father, and he is the absolute joy of my life! I'm currently considering a 2nd boxer, out of rescue. Can ya get any happier than that???? Life could only get better with another boxer!! Welcome to BW....

Two things

By "hollows" I meant the sunken in parts on their chests just below their necks. That's not by any means the right terminology...just the best way I had of expressing it.

Ruth--Major was the name of my grandpa's favorite dog! By all accounts he was the sweetest and smartest dog EVER ;-). So I think it's an auspicious name!
