Hello everyone and happy New Year. My female turned one year old today and she still has not gone into heat. Is it possible I missed noticing it or is it possible she still has not got it. When do Boxers usually get their first cycle. Can anyone tell me your own personal expeiences. My mom looked at her and said she would be able to tell, she said it looks like she has never had it. Any info would be much appreciated.

Have you all had her the whole time--since she was a pup? I was just wondering because if you rescued her, she was most likely spayed.

I've also never heard that you could look at a dog and know whether they have been in heat or not!!????!!
Debbie or Julie PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong!

After the first heat the vulva doesn't always go back down to previous size. Both females I've had did not return to "pre-heat" size. But, I'm sure this also depends on the bitch.

Vets may say they can tell, but they can't always. My foundation bitch was rather generously endowed in the nipple department, and my vet insisted she must have had a heat before I got her (I got her at 15 months). I trusted that her experienced breeder wouldn't have missed such a thing, and besides, her line doesn't tend to come in until about 15-18 mos.

Sure enough at 17 months she came in, as did her daughter.

First heat

Chispa turned 1 year on 12/28 and by 01/01 she got her first heat. Now I want to know how long will this last? Today is 01/07 and she's still bleeding. Any help? She's kind of 'moody'.

 :(

Purepayton: She could go into heat anytime from now up until around 2 years of age. I highly recommend you have her spayed... I didn't get my female mixed breed spayed until after her first heat cycle... I regreted it! It was such a mess. They need to wear doggy diapers and believe me they are no fun to change!
I was smart this time... I got a female Bichon in May 2003 and had her spayed at 6 months old... before her heat cycle! :)

Chispa: I can't exactly remember how long my mixed breed was in heat... that was 4 years ago... but I believe it was at least two weeks if not a little longer. I also suggest you have your girl spayed after this cycle is over. It will be SO much easier and nicer for all. :)

I had just asked my vet the same questions you are having now last month. Sidda is 14 months old and had not been in heat. He said not to worry, it was normal.
Well just this week she started showing signs that she is in heat.

So many dogs going into HEAT!

Please do some research and get your girls spayed! Not just for their OWN HEALTH, but also for the thousands of dogs that are killed DAILY because of people who are breeding!

Please look on this site---there is so much info and you will make the right decision, I'm sure. After all, we all want what's best for our boxer babies, right? ;)

Christine

PS--that was certainly not to the FEW wonderful, reputable breeders (who are the ONLY ones who should be breeding IMHO) we have on the board! (Alisha, Debbie, Christina, etc)

We wish now that we had spayed Sidda before her first heat. At the time we had not completely decided on the idea of breeding, but after joining BW and trying to learn all we can, we know now this is not a good thing to do.
We are going to have Sidda spayed as soon as her first heat is over. This has been difficult for us to tell. I thought she was going to into heat because her private area swelled, but there was never any discharge or changes. Today, she started bleeding. I am going to do a search, but I am wondering how long the bleeding part lasts usually? How long till this cycle is completely over?
