Heartworm Medication

Lady Liberty

Boxer Pal
My Lady Liberty is presently on Sentinal as a heartworm preventative. Although Sentinal is suppose to control fleas it does not control ticks. So therefore, Lady also uses Frontline Plus. Recently I complained about her excessive shedding and my Cousin's friend in Florida who is a vet assistant said that Sentinal can cause hair loss. He recommended Interceptor instead.

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on what medications other Boxer owner's are using for their pets.

Thanks

I give Xena garlic for flea prevention. So far I've only seen fleas jump off of her if they land on her by mistake outside :)

I use Interceptor for my girls and I'm pleased with it. It gets pinworms as well as hook worms and heart worm, so they are better protected from more than with Heartguard, etc.

It doesn't have any flea/tick control in it however. I use Adams flea/tick collars.

Seasonal shedding can be expected in boxers. I think people assume that because boxers have short hair, they don't shed. Far from the truth. Susie (my white girl) sheds all year long and as much as any long-haired dog I've ever known. Maggie sheds a lot too, not as much as Susie (or maybe I don't notice it because she's fawn colored and I live in a beige world). ;)

I've used Interceptor for years with both my girls, and have had no problems with it.

I used the Heartguard monthly preventative. It's just a little "log" thing that he eats right up. For fleas, we use Advantage since in our area, the fleas were becoming immune to Frontline. Advantage works great, on both the cats and Scrapper.

Hera uses Heartguard too. Althought I may have to do some reasearch on the other brands after reading this thread!

My dogs get HeartGard Plus, and it also prevents hookworm and I believe also roundworm. For the fleas... I've given up on Frontline! I've heard of too many dogs that still have fleas and use Frontline! My Bichon included. smashicon So, next time I will get Advantage.

We don't really have a problem with fleas out here, maybe because it's too dry ? /shrug. I use Interceptor for heartworm because it also controls other worms as well and after doing research it was the one I thought would be best and my vet concurred.

Xena hates the little "log" thing :) When I bought it, the vet told me to keep it out of reach because it tastes so good. I tried feeding it to her for the first time last month (when I was already late for work) and she spit it out 3 times. I didn't want to put away a half chewed little "log" thing ;) so I had to break it up and mix it with the emergency can of puppy food [insert disgusted icon here] It looks like it already has worms in it
